Remembering the recent thread about some of the "Amish" quilts on eBay I was interested to read a long article in our Sunday paper about the Lancaster area quilt industry. It has an Allentown, PA byline so I expect it will appear in other papers as well. It discusses the fact that since the 1970s many of the "Amish" quilts in Lancaster quilt shops have been outsourced to local Hmong workers (immigrants from Laos/Thailand) and after the influx of crude Chinese-made quilts they now import them directly for villages in Thailand. According to the article there are whole Thai villages where everyone from children to the elders are stitching away on "Amish" quilts.
The implications I took from the article is that the craftsmanship of the Hmong is much better than the Chinese but that many the "Amish" quilt shops are not very forthcoming with the information about the source.

I bet they can traced their ancestry back to Amish, and the Indian making celtic throws came from Ireland.
And the American Indian selling Far East jewelry really came from China.
Back in the 80s,I bot a piece of American Indian jewelry from the Smithsonian catalog and 2 years later I received a check from them saying the jewelry is not handmade by the Indians.

hwahwa - I went to the Smithsonian Indian museum earlier this year and the prices they hvae on their "real" indian nicnac's was unreal. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for a real indian made trinket but the prices they were asking was just unreal. Then again, the Smithsonian is in DC and there aint nothing cheap in DC.

I doubt very much that the Amish are diluting their own reputation for quality workmanship. More likely some "outsider" in concert with Mammon.
A number of ethnic groups have smartened up and created brands (with trademark protection) to protect the quality of original items. Otherwise they face brand dilution with all the knockoffs.

Ohhhhhhhhh, it's one of those. I forgot to look it up in the Seinfeld dictionary.
Seinfeld definition: Manziere - a bra created for older men who have excess flab in the upper chest area and give the appearance of having breasts.
So what are you trying to say, Ralphie's got flab up top??? Hope he doesn't see this post or your gona be on the doggie poo list.
