The original Top Level domain extensions were:
.com = "COMmercial" : Businesses
.net = "NETwork" : ISPs and related groups
.org = "ORGanization" : Nonprofits, clubs, etc.
.gov = "GOVernment" : Government, but mostly just the US
.edu = "EDUcation" : Universities, etc.
Obviously, there is no real enforcement of most of these categories, since pretty much anyone can register .com, .net and .org's.
There are newer ones like .biz and .name and .tv and such, but these really haven't taken off completely.

Ebay has probably registered the .com, .net, and .org domain names to keep anyone else from getting them and setting up a lookalike site. It's a common practice for large companies.

stone, I originally said that wrong. What I should have said was some eBay users have .com & others have .net & I wondered why & what the difference was.
