I have a potential buyer who is asking for my email address, rather than working through the eBay Message System. He claims he is unable to purchase a BIN item from me through the regular route. I do not understand how having my email address will help him BIN.
He wrote "...how do you want me to pay for the item? I can't end it with Buy Now, since it will not let me."
Does anyone here have any idea what might be the problem here? I've checked my "Blocked Bidders List" and he is not on it. He has over 400 feedback and all but one (long ago) are positive.
Any ideas would be most welcome! Or is this another glitch in the eBay system this evening?

Is it a Paypal immediate payment required or maybe Paypal only auction? OR US auction only and he is out of country? You have non US blocked bids? Did you write him back and ask him what he meant by would not let him do BIN?

Thanks, Irked! I hadn't thought about him being a NON-USA buyer. Most of these LPs are marked for International shipping, but a few are not (my goof). And this is one of those few that is not marked as International. (DUH on me!) I'll check this out...

This for sure is not the problem. Not checking international only makes the item not show up on international searches. It does not prevent an international bidder from bidding
It sounds more like someone phishing for your e-mail address for one reason or another. Are you 100% sure it actually came through the ebay e-mail system. I doubt it did.

This is what is leading me to believe that it is a spoof. Why does he want to pay before he/she has actually one the auction?

I thought it was a bit "fishy/phishy", too, when I read his first message. I did not reply through my email address, as he requested in his second contact. I explained briefly that I do not correspond through my own mail system until the other party has become a confirmed buyer, due to spam and phishing. His response? "That's silly!"
He wrote again through eBay Message, but we had left for a Mother's Day dinner in town, so I was not able to respond to his last until about two hours later. Seems he has gone off-line for now -- or he has bought from another seller. Mine is only one of several sellers with this same album, seven of which are listed at a lower price than mine.
Win some! Lose some! But NO spam/phish for this gal, thanks to lurking on the Vendio Board!
I think you've been corrected on that misunderstanding at least twice. It CAN, and in my case DOES, prevent international bidders from bidding if you have set your profile to not accept bids from members registered in locations to which you do not ship. In that case, it requires that their ID be entered in the buyer requirements exemptions list.
eBay is complicated enough without spreading disinformation.

An up-date:
After about a dozen emails from the "potential buyer who is asking for my email address" he finally bought the item he was interested in. As Irked had suggested, I had non-USA buyers blocked on that item. When I changed it to 'Will Ship Worldwide' his bid went through just fine.
Before bidding he did, however, want another item and I quoted him a major discount on the S&H. He countered with another offer -- much lower -- which I refused. He bought the original item, paid through PayPal and the package is in the mail this morning.
The interesting thing is that he is an International buyer, but does have a PayPal Confirmed USA address for shipment.
Irked...
I owe you a commission on this one! You are the one who suggested the solution and made the sale possible.
You wealth of misinformation. Explain this one then. I have a company that consigns very expensive model cars. He wishes to have the auctions run as USA only. However, he does have 6 international customers that he will sell to. The auctions are set up as USA only and the auction number is e-mailed to all of his customer base including the international bidders. I do not have them included on any special acceptable bidders list as I have no one in my acceptable bidders list. You tell me why then they are able to place bids without restrictions?
I can tell you why. It is because ebay doesn't block international bidders, they just do show the auction on any sites except the USA site. If an international bidder goes to the USA site, they are free to go. That is also the reason why when filing for UID, one of the options is "the bidder is from a country I don't ship to"

Pat, you are welcome, being helpful is all the payment I need. Makes one feel useful to be able to help. So glad it worked out with the sell.
