vintagepostcardsdotorg:
Question: I too have a couple of go-daddy accounts as well as a hosting account. Could you give a little more insight into how you stored your images?
did you use an FTP client (ie. filezilla, fetch) or what? We are getting ready to add about 10,000 more items over the next month and would like to have a back-up image hosting site.
Thanks for any insight. Also, did you design your pages? Very nice.
thanks for the compliments. always nice to hear, smiles. yes, i designed the web pages. (it was a STEEP learning curve for me and much gnashing - sp.? - of teeth, headaches, lack of sleep, etc.! i had to get help on *.css, style sheets. i hate them but i always knew in my mind's eye what i wanted the web site to look like, if that makes any sense to you.
before i forget, let me know if you put up a full-blown web site, might be able to do a link exchange with you.
okay, now to the main question, go daddy and ftp. if this is too confusing, e'mail me at webmaster - at sign - vintagepostcards.org and i'll try to walk you through.
i'm running windows xp pro. as far as i know, what i'm about to say will work with other versions of windows as well. you do ***not*** need an FTP client. you can go spend money on one if you want to, but you don't actually need one.
in your address bar at the top of your web page browser - ie, firefox, etc., you type this:
ftp://your log-in name - at sign - ftp.vintageads4u.com
hit enter. there you have your uncharted territory, as it were. right click to make a file folder or use the edit choice on the top of your browser menu above the address bar. for example, right click and make a folder that says "images." you will now have a folder by that name. you can then organize other folders within that file - let's say a folder that you name "magazine" for magazine ads or whatever categories apply to you.
then, all you have to do really is this:
minimize or make smaller the open ftp window. pull up the file(s) on your computer that you want to upload. hopefully, they are already organized within folders. all you have to do is drag and drop the appropriate folders into the "images" folder at go daddy. or use whatever organizational system you prefer. and voila! your images are uploaded.
there are other miscellaneous things i could tell you but i didn't want to make this feel overwhelmingly because it's not, it's child's play. really.
while i'm thinking of it, make a "private" directory at go daddy. i stash backup copies, stuff the public doesn't really need to see, etc. in there.
simple way: open windows notepad.
in the blank screen, type this, one to a line:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /_vti_log/
Disallow: /aspnet_client/
Disallow: /stats/
Disallow: /_private/
make sure you type it exactly as above. save the file as robots.txt. upload it to your root (main) directory at go daddy, using your newly found ftp'ing skills. this tells the search engine spiders what they can and can't search. in the example above, i am allowing them to search anything pertaining to ebay auctions and images and all web pages and images that are in use, etc. it is nobody's business what your stats, etc. are.
if this is too overwhelming or you have questions, let me know. print this out for reference and give it a try. i bet you could upload tons of images today!

Thanks, that makes sense and I am on xp also. There was a tutorial on Godaddy as to how to use xp to upload but you helped me understand exactly how to do the images.
So, as not to take up board space, I will email you with any more questions, thank you for that offer.
Usually summer slows down for me and I thought it would be a good time to bite the bullet and flesh out the old stand alone web site. Right now I have one that points to my Vendio store.
Before Christmas my VD store was producing over 50% of my sales. Then after Christmas they died. I'm still near the top of google, etc. when searching for a particular item, so that is not it. I do have complaints about the time it takes for the store to load and some folks don't like the checkout procedure.
Anyway, it can't hurt to be everywhere at once. We are thinking about creating a couple of sites that feature just one category. We already have one that is just auto ads but it is pretty rough.
Thank you for your help!
Beth
