I sold a Czech postcard for $19.00. Big surprise - never received payment. Then I get an item not received open dispute. I answer it, explaining item was never paid. The answer requiring my response was in Czech. I ended up sending the item because freezing my PayPal account or whatever eBay can do would wreak havoc. Has anyone else experience dealing with non-English disputes?

I would think they paid if they filed a dispute should have a transaction number on it? Anyway I think I would make a phone call to Paypal or Ebay and tell them you do not speak Czech. I never heard of them not translating could it possibly be a phishing scam? Hope you didn't click their link to sign in in the email.

No, it was a dispute that showed up in eBay's dispute console and My Messages. Every time I signed into eBay I got the nasty reminder that a dispute was open awaiting my reply. I first answered in English, when he responded in Czech the ball was in my court again. He didn't pay via PayPal, as far as I can tell.

How frustrating! An interesting scenario, though. So you sent the card, and then what happened? He closed the dispute? Things stopped popping up? You replied in English again and waiting for him? I am sure no one at eBay actually reads these disputes, so would it really matter if you replied in English or Urdu as long as you respond?
In fact, you should be able to tell from your My eBay tab if something was waiting to be shipped if he did pay and for some reason you missed it.
I think I would at least get live help on this one. Would really like to know how this is handled.

I've noticed a whole bunch of NEWBIES who think that because they attached a CC to their eBay registration (or, for that matter, their PP accounts), that when they click the "BUY NOW" button on the item listing page, that they are automatically charged for the item...
Had one turkey who kept hitting the "BUY" button on a $1500 balance!
WHAT A MESS to straighten out!
Anyhoo, is yer CHECK a newbie?
BTW: is yer listing "USA ONLY" by any chance?
I think yer apprehension about PP is exaggerated -- they really DO try to work with you to solve problems! I would have called PP befor shipping, since you WERE NEVER PAID FOR THE ITEM!

Jane - PayPal can't freeze your account when a dispute is filed through ebay - only when a PP dispute is filed and if the dude didn't pay with PP he can't file a PP dispute. In fact, I think the ebay dispute against a seller is a toothless procedure. REmember back when I bought a DVD from the former ebay employee whom I called, emailed, negged....one of the things I did do was file a dispute with ebay and he never responded! I am still out my $30 and he is still in business, unscathed by the dispute I filed.

Those darn foreign language emails from Ebay users really isspay emay offay. I often wonder if when I send out an invoice to someone in France through Ebay if they get it in English or does Ebay translate it for THEM. The Asian responses are the worst, they show up as a bunch of question marks. Maybe I will redo my TOS and state that I require all communications are to be in English or I will consider it to be a non valid transaction and I will file for a FVF refund.
I can't read enchFray, ermanGay, aiwaneseTay, zechCay or even Pig Latin for that matter.

Neglus is right that paypal wasn't involved at that point and even it they were - paypal could only freeze the $19.00 plus shipping so you should not have shipped it until you found out what was going on.

I have to stop reading the eBay stores board - I get really paranoid that eBay can end my listings or worse... I went ahead and said I would mail the card. The 'customer' seemed to have no problem reading that communique and closed the dispute.

So why don't you open an NPB dispute against them? Looks like they got a free postcard but at least you won't have to eat the fees!!!

I don't understand how you would have to ship prior to receiving payment!? It seems all you would have to tell eBay is that you have not received payment. If you had received a Paypal payment wouldn't that be a matter of record?

Early on as an eBay seller I made the mistake of shipping to several US buyers before getting paid - well never again! Took months to collect payment from them for their Christmas presents and finally had to call in the USPS Postal Inspectors to get any leeway - boy did they pay up fast after that...

Now it is your turn open up dispute of non paying bidder.
WAS it marked paid in your my ebay page??? if so he paid with Paypal probably. IF it was not marked paid I would NOT have sent the card. But you can now maybe file non paying bidder alert on him.
Mainly you should not have mailed the card until you found if it was paid or not if they mailed payment maybe you got it and didn't mark it ???

Postcard buyers are generally honest folks and if they tell me they sent cash (in a language I can understand), I generally believe them, assuming that it got pilfered along the way or that god-forbid, I made a mistake (it happens, especially during busy seasons) and go ahead and ship the card. I've only had repeated trouble with his area of the world and when I responded back to Ebay that payment wasn't received, he responded in Czech, eBay told me it was my turn to respond to him... I could see a long and nasty road ahead and the best I could hope for is get my fees back, get a neg and get stuck with a card I will get stiffed for next time I list. I have a card from Poland I have listed and sold three times for over $25 to different user ID's, filed NPB three times. I'm not going out of my way to find slavic cards anymore!
