Every year pre-Katrina my family went fishing out of Biloxi in the summer. We would love to visit the Gulf again as next week is vaction time (YIPPPPEEEEEE!). Does anyone know if fishing has been affected in that area since Katrina? Also any suggestions for other areas in Georgia or Florida to go for fishing would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

How far south are you willing to go? Cedar Key Florida has always been great for fishing and is far enough away that Katrina would not have had any impacted on the fishing.
We go to Steinhatchee scalloping & fishing. The scallops were not very plentiful the first of July but should be fine by now. Fishing was great if you can stand the heat.

it's been hot hot hot but it's finally starting to cool off - you can feel fall is on it's way. plus we've had rain finally here in NW florida.
fishing? Destin maybe. But that's not a cheap place to vacation.

That's why scalloping is so much fun - you get to jump in the water.

What is wrong with your local fish market?
Saves on gas and safer too!

Thanks for the suggestions. I will run them by the group tonight. Somehow I think the local fish market will not create the great family outing memories we have become used to. Of course, everyone might like the idea of a guaranteed catch

Hey glassgrl...thanks so much for the info. I think we are going to try to get a central location to a lot of areas. Are there any areas you would avoid or better yet prefer to stay as well as eat? ... I did try a travel agent to find out info, but they just read from a brochure. In my experience most things are not as glossy as the picture and every town has a place no one wants to stay at. My luck I pick just that one LOL
Thanks again everyone!

you're coming here?
you want Gulf front or somewhere reasonable?
To eat - we like Triple J's on Thomas Drive. Lunch or early bird. GREAT lunch menu.
Capt Anderson's is a little pricey but always good. Like a fish platter would be about $25.95. But I have to go at least once a year to have grilled shrimp and greek salad. I love their char grilled snapper.
Capt Jacks is all you can eat buffet with crab legs. $21.95 per person I think.
I'll think some more.........

Thanks...I'm starving now . Doesn't really matter water front or not. I found a condo in Orange Beach waterfront on Perdido Beach road real reasonable. Is that a good area? I was thinking maybe we could travel to other areas within that week easily.
The reason I am so leery is that once I opted for a Ramada Limited in DC because I recognized the chain. Turned out it was sandwiched between 2 liquor stores and the police were there with lights and sirens ALL night. There was a shooting 2 blocks away and the suspect was at large LOL I try to be more careful now!

Yeah I know Alabama. We were going to do day trips from there to Panama City, Destin, Pensacola or stay at one of those listed and travel the other way. Florida is still my first choice if possible, but this condo seems too good to pass up. THAT too good always bites me later. I thought someone might have visited that area before so I asked Bet you thought I had lost it throwing that in LOL

well - take it from someone (DH) who has owned and worked for a hotel. ASK TO SEE THE ROOM BEFORE YOU PAY.
I swear I used to go visit my gf who air-brushed T shirts at the beach. Across the street was a hotel/motel and I actually saw them washing sheets in the swimming pool. Let's just be politically correct and say they weren't American owned ok?
There's a girl that rents condos on Ebay here. Something like Jill's condo. It's usually reasonable or at least it seems like it to me. {warning! next to club LaVela can be loud! the scenery is good though}
Here she is: http://www.vrbo.com/44093

If I were going to spend good money I'd go west to Sandestin or Seaside.
If I REALLY wanted a vacation I'd take another cruise. Hands down best value for the money.
Wow this is a great website. Here's the listings for Orange Beach - some with pics.
