......The new finance chief at eBay (EBAY, news, msgs) will get up to $700,000 if he can't get the price he wants for the Texas house he gave up to take his job with eBay in California.......

These types of incentives are pretty common for high level job candidates. And companies I have worked for would make up losses etc. if they transferred you to another geographic region (one company would just buy your house, if you wanted).

Years ago good friends of ours worked for IBM, and when he was transferred, IBM bought his house at the fair market value.

I'm sure he negotiated that as part of his contract. Housing is so high-priced here that he's probably looking at a minimum of $3 million for an executive-type house.
Not in San Jose, mind you (yecch) but Saratoga or Los Gatos perhaps. Here's what you can get in Saratoga for $3.195 million:

Wow, glad I live on the east coast in the middle of nowhere. They want that much for a tiny little 5 acre lot, yikes! $3.195 million would get you multiple hundreds of acre's and even a better view where I'm at. What a waste of money.

Even worse, Mike, odds are most of those five acres aren't even usable. The house is on a hillside.
But you know what they say about real estate: location, location, location. The house is close to one of the world's richest economies. The tech boom is starting up again, and there's real money to be made. People will pay to live here.
Of course, the beauty of eBay is that you can do it from wherever. Amy sells from Alaska. I've always wanted to get the giganto motor home, equip it with satellite Internet, set all my auctions to PayPal-only and roam the country.
I actually did something like this once: went from California to New York by car, selling and shipping all the way. This was before the widespread acceptance of PayPal by buyers. I did get a significant percentage of people who didn't read and refused to close the sale because they couldn't send a money order. That wouldn't happen now.

We are actually thinking of packing up the RV and getting out of dodge for a couple of months this winter. I was thinking about dabbling in eBay on the road. I won't have a lot of storage is the problem. It's nice to hear that it's been done with some success.

Small items, Amy. Collectibles like buttons, fountain pens or coins. Jewelry. Craft parts. Dollhouse furniture.
I once scored 900 sterling silver souvenir spoons on eBay, sold by someone who had bought a huge lot at auction, picked out the best ones, and just wanted to dump the rest. That would have been a good lot to take on the road. Man, I spent a lot of time scanning.
You can deal with email offline, then send it when you get an Internet connection.

That's a great idea. I'll keep my eyes open for some good Alaska items. We taking the marine highway down and making all the stops along the way. Steve does a couple of travel radio shows and so we are taking the "show on the road". He'll do all the interviews and digital editing. I'll work on the website and dabble in eBay.
Plans are always changing but I hope we are able to pull it off. We need a change of pace.

I have not sold on the road but sure do get a lot of stuff to sell while on the road. My wife came back last year after being with her Mother for a surgery. They had used their motorhome to say in town where she had the surgery and my wife filled up the back of the pull along pickup plus other empty places in the motorhome with ebay finds at different sells she found on way to hospital etc. Never been out of town yet we didn't find a lot os things along the way.
Thos pictures of that house in Ca. are nice but with things way they are I wonder if their fog is smoke instead of fog LOL

Well, aren't we a ray of sunshine.
