I'm searching for dishes in a certain pattern for a friend; when I looked at this one (I was signed in to eBay), the above showed. How could the seller know I'm at the above zip code???? I haven't e-mailed the seller or asked a question or such. It's a mystery to me.

Roadsmith's right. This is new. I think it retrieves your shipping address if you have logged in.

Pixi, I think you have it right. MIke, I didn't even click on anything in that auction, let alone a postage calculator! Just looked at it and sent it to my friend for whom I bidding.

Actually, I LIKE the "Save" feature on "Calculated Shipping" in SEARCH. Once you've in-put your zip code, ALL of the "calculated" shipping fees show up on the search page. No more having to click each listing as you go through your possible buys/bids.
An eye-opener, I might add. Some of those shipping fees exposed on the search page are way out of line with the product weight/ship-cost.
Could it be this is eBay's way of trying to control excessive shipping fees?
One more positive (among so many negatives) on eBay - from the buyer's point-of-view.

It doesn't work with all shipping calculators. I just got suckered in auction # 130035741589 . The item is being sold on consignment and the seller did a horrible job of listing so I thought I was getting a steal. (His client sure isn't getting much). The search page shows 'See item description' for shipping - I forgot to check until AFTER I confirmed my bid - he charges $7.05 for 2 postcards!

That is a bit over-the-top for shipping two (2) postcards! I ship figurines, USPS Priority, for less than that.
Can you simply cancel your bid? I've never had to cancel a bid, but am wondering if there is an "Excessive Shipping Fees" reason for doing so?????

Thanks all, an expensive shipment but a cheap lesson in the long run. Next time I'll check first - especially when I'm bottom feeding!
Edited to add: On second thought, I did report this to eBay as excessive shipping. If they pull it great -- if they don't, another lesson learned.

The seller doesn't know your zip code, Ebay does. The shipping amounts show up in the auction because when you sign in, Ebay knows your zip code and calculates it for you, even if you are just browsing and not bidding.

Pix glad you got out of that bad auction with such high shipping. Nightmare of a scoundral sounds like to me.
