Hi Pixiamom, you can see the hat much better than we can . Heres a super hat site that should help date and tell what type military it is. http://www.military-collections.com/USArmy.html

Looks like Marine Corp. to me to. Where's Jack when you need him. 1 out of 4 people are mentally unbalanced. Take a look at your 3 closest friends. If they seem alright, you're the one! - Kyle Stubbins, CMS

when you scan you can request "custom scan" where you can request 150% 200% etc for the scan. then crop and post

The larger I scan, the less clear the detail. I can't get better than the original photo which is fuzzy on the hat detail.

did you do a custom scan though? NOT enlarging a regular scan!! when it scans it - it enlarges the scan and it is not fuzzy!!
I apologize - instead of just custom you may have to increase the DPI. I use Adobe Elements 2.0 and my scanner says custom scan and then for custom I can increase my DPI which in turn makes a much bigger (but slower) scan.
However sometimes you just need a little extra.
I agree - it may not work with this but it's worth a try.

I don't know how to post a pix, but this web site has them. The eagle and globe are tilted, thats why I think it's Marine Corp.

I normally scan at 96 DPI for web viewing. I scanned the head shots at 300 dpi. It magnified the view but did not make it sharper.
