Hi, all: You can see local news and pictures of that awful arson fire in So. Cal. by going to our town's paper website, towncrier.com. We're fortunate that Idyllwild appears to be spared this time, but the devastation in our mountain range has been severe. The fire came within a few miles of the little area called Pinewood (see fire map), where our old family cabin is. Those dead firemen were known to all of us, and the captain, Mark L., was well known in our town, having lived here most of his life. We are all in shock--and in the midst of it we've been assembling our evacuation lists--in case. Please send your thoughts and prayers to the firemen's families.

I've been watching the news about the fires. What a terrible thing to have happen. To think that someone set those fires deliberately just sickens me. I hope they catch the person or persons responsible. Someone knows something and I think it's only a matter of time before they're found out.
Prayers to you and your family, Roadsmith! I couldn't imagine having to leave my home behind in the event of an evacuation.

The fire is now 70% contained and isn't threatening us, but it's been a verrrry tense week around here. Sober faces in the shops, mourning the loss of the firemen. I'm confident they'll find the arsonists (who may be teenagers, from a recent report) and execute them. Although, if they're teenagers, lord knows they may get off easy. Grrrr.

I was wondering when I heard the initial reports if any of you were close. I call that a tad bit too close. Sure am happy you are safe and was spared. I just don't know what i would do in your case. Glad it has spared you. I pray they catch the creeps who set the fire. Such a tragedy my prayers are with the firemen and families.
Thanks for the site for close to home information on it. Good luck.

What a threat like this does is "concentrate the mind wonderfully," as Mark Twain said about impending death.
What's really important to us? What do we have that's irreplaceable? Well, family members and pets(of course), photos, journals, memorabilia, some jewelry, a bit of clothing, perhaps some art work, computer back-up disks. Almost everything else can be replaced.
This is an encouragement to clean out "stuff" and sell it or give it away. An encouragement not to get too attached to things. Places remain, even if fire-damaged, and rebuilding is always an option.
That said, I fervently hope we aren't burned down!

Tom: That poem is very sweet. Thanks for sending!
We are all hoping the FBI and others, with help from hundreds of tipsters, can solve this arson case. It would be hard to imagine the anger in this mountains.
