Here we have an item that I have "adopted" It measures 8.5 inches across Has 3 feet that are as fillagreed as the plate is. It isn't magnetic. Louped it and see no oxidization of the finish. I checked a plate where the fillagree had a separation, looking for the base metal. NOPE! It's that color all the way through. I found a price tag buried in the bottom of the box this was in that read $ 411.80 HUH ! It's a mystery plate! It's either a pretty wannabe gold/brass or something else.
Any opinions on how to test this? (I know, it's probably nothing but a pretty plated somethin' plate. These days of late, I'm not taking any chances. I have found some kewel treasures that people thought were junk.

I think I'd take it to a jeweler to have them test it for gold.Worst they could say is nope not gold, just plated. Then maybe stop at a antique shop and see if they will give you any info.Like what to call it or maker. It sure is beautiful ! Is it heavy ?

I took it to the jeweler. Darn it! He "tested" it by scraping it! He scraped a leg and said that it is either white gold with a gold plating or silver with a gold plate. I think I need to go to someone else. Anyone know of someone I can go to that is local to me in san mateo, CA? FLUFF? Do you know any one?

take it to a pawn shop. they have stuff where they HAVE to know if it's gold or not. I can't believe the jeweler scraped it! I'd be saying "whoa hold on there buddy!"

How can this be called a plate if it has 3 legs?
The flowers hold the clue to its origin, anyone recognise what kind of flowers?

This does look Asian to me,if you show the box and the 3 legs,it could be a shallow plate to put jewelry, sweets or coins??

Lovely plate, or trivet, or whatever it is...but why do you think it's evil?

lol I think they are talking about the title of the post.
om·i·nous
ADJECTIVE:
Menacing; threatening: ominous black clouds; ominous rumblings of discontent.
Of or being an omen, especially an evil one.
Sorry to hear the jeweler scraped it ! A pawn shop is gonna rub it on a stone...just as bad as scraping it and then drop acid on the stone to see if its gold.

I get it. Well, Maybe it's jinxed. Jinxed junk. Toastie, We used to have a few pawn shops in the area. Not anymore. Slowly but surely, they disappear. Too affluent an area, I guess. I'll search some out. I wonder if they're open on Sunday?

I doubt one would be open on a Sunday unless your in a really big town and then I still doubt it. Our little small town is just weird they closed on Saturdays here which I think would be the best day but nooo just Monday thru Friday. I hope it turns out to be something really special. Do you have a picture of the outer box ? Maybe its the piece of the puzzle we need to find more info on it.
Edited to add ...Whats the name of the store on the receipt that might help too.

There is no store receipt. Just a hang tag with the price on it, 411.80 . Maybe it's not a price. There was no $ sign on the tag.

My guess would be a dresser tray. Probably made anywhere from Spain to Israel to the middle east.
It is most likely gold-filled or gold plated wire.

Take it to another jeweler or pawn shop. I don't know why some are bemoaning the fact that the jeweler scraped it. The only way to test it is to file into it and drop acid on the filed spot. The reaction will then tell you if it's gold, silver, or brass. Rubbing on a stone just won't work....you won't get past the plate(if it is plate). A scrape could work, but can be hard to be 100% certain, thus the response you got from the first jeweler. If it's white underneath it's probably silver with a thick gold plate. A piece like this would not have been made in white gold and then plated with yellow gold.

I agree with LtRay - it has as Middle East look to it. I see jewelry like this all the time from that area but it's rarely gold plated.
It is beautiful. Maybe Fluffy can help with someone to test it for you. I could tell were to go in Jax, Fl. but no help with Calif.
