I just had to tell someone about this. My daughter had to do the opening today for the sales of Playstation 3 at Best Buy. They only had 26 systems . They had people camping out in tents in front of the store 2 days before (crazy). Anyways sometime last night they went out and told the people that were camping out they only had 26 units ,so after some moaning the extra people left. This morning some freak was waving a gun trying to make people get out of line. Holy crap what is this world coming to that people wave a gun at you for a game system. I was freaking out about it when she told me on the phone ...sheesh ! She said everyone inside was safe and the police took care of it really fast. It was the people outside that were in danger. Hard to believe you have to worry about your child at a Best Buy job !!

Toast... Last night on our only!! NH news station... they showed a line at a best buy in Manchester. One person said "hey I pay $600 tomorrow and sell it for $2600.00 next week on ebay thats why I'm camping out"..

I did watch several auctions close 2 nights ago and they were selling in that range of $..... Will ships on the 17th.... guess they were either employees that had an in, or their husband was camping out!

BUT people with guns.... thats scary I'm glad the police showed up quickly

I wonder how many scammers will start selling "pictures" of the play station like they did with the IBOX last year.

The gun incident was on the news last night. Toooo scary--and for a GAME?!!!!!!!!!! But if you expect to make a huge profit, I guess some people will do anything for $$$.

That must have been a different place roadsmith because her store just had it happen this morning. Scary Chit !

They shouldn't have as many scammers this year classic because of all the rules to list them but I see quite a few BIN which is against the listing rules. One guy has one listed for 25,000 lol what a crook. Hope no one is that stupid.

Our Wallyworld store in West Bend, WI lined up 20 chairs outside the store. Told people to gather on the other side of the parking lot, and race to the chairs.
In the resulting melee, one dummy ran into a light pole and dislocated his jaw. Latest word is that he has a lawyer.

I hope he does have a lawyer. What a STUPID way to hand out the playstations. How is a race across a parking lot any more fair than flipping a coin or drawing numbers?

The real sick thing about this is..... in a marketing survey, the average Playstation addict (player on a regular basis) is 33 years old.

GRACIOUS , why are these ADULTS not at work instead of home playing?
I thought all those adults camping in front of BB and CC across the country were there to buy for their children.

NOT SO , according to the consumer survey. These loafers have all this time on their hands cuz they are PETER PANS !

In some cities here in NC they had to hand out numbers to get some to leave for their safety. We had a horrific storm yesterday. Some refused to leave--CRAZY , just CRAZY

IMO- he needs a psychiatrist more than a lawyer. A good head doctor would serve his
problem better. He needs some direction(so he would not bump into light post) and a purpose in life.

I saw one of these listed on eBay this morning for $100,000 ! A bit greedy, don't you think? Also, I saw another one listed for $75,000. Of course, they were no bids.

Also, I was just listening to the "Howie Carr" radio show, which is broadcast live from Boston 3 PM - 7 PM Eastern time. The topic for the first hour of the show is the pandamonium relating to the Playstation 3.
Anyway, a caller from New Hampshire said he is a 61 year-old eBay seller. A 23 year old friend of his is paying people to wait in line for these Playstation 3's. The 23 year old is not an eBay seller.....he's listing them on eBay through the 61 year-old seller's account (with his permission).
The caller stated that the 23 year-old will make a profit of $25,000 - $30,000 from the Playstations purchased by the people he hired to wait in line. Quite an enterprising young man!

There has been more than one gun incident and melee. One teenager in our area bought the PS3 and then was threatened with a gun when he got in his car with his father to hand it over or else!! He did and the gunslinger got away.

They interviewed the pople camping out at a local BB, this one had 140 systems. Only 5 said they were buying for their own use. The others were all going to sell them on Ebay and get money for Christmas presents!!They excpected to make at least $2000 profit on each unit.

Greed, greed, greed!!

Greed, greed, greed!!

What, it's greed if you see a market opportunity and successfully exploit it?

If you use a gun, of course, it's called something else altogether.

Greed, etc,

Hmm, then why do we say Ebay is greedy, isn't that what they are doing?? Taking a business opportunity, etc.

It is greed! Greed by PS3 creating unnatural shortages to create panic and tons of free publicity. If anyone dies or is seriously harmed as a result, I hope they get their pants sued off them!

I don't know which "we" you're referring to, but I don't consider eBay greedy. They're a public company, doing what public companies do: trying to create value for shareholders.

A lot of this "Oh! They're so GREEDY!" stuff comes from unresolved emotional conflict. You want to make as much money as you can in order to build a happy successful life, yet you also want to place limits on how much money and success other people can have.

What is sad is that that conflict keeps so many people from achieving as much as they could, especially on eBay. You have to grant permission for other people to prosper and be happy before the way is cleared for you to be. And at the same time you must also get rid of inappropriate guilt over what success you do achieve.

Here in Silicon Valley we have notorious examples of overabundant success, like Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison. Do I begrudge Larry his $40 million home? Of course not. He saw opportunities and worked hard. Would I like to have Steve's private jet? Sure! But he's certainly entitled to it. Steve Jobs is a marketing genius.

He is also possibly the luckiest person on the planet. You've got to shake your head. People who get pancreatic cancer are for all intents and purposes goners. It has a 10% survival rate at five years. So what happens? Steve gets pancreatic cancer, but it's the GOOD extremely rare kind that is actually treatable. It makes you wonder.

Don't think so.

That old chestnut about making people defecate uncontrollably by slipping X-Lax into their food has been around for a long, long time, at least since yours truly was in high school.

(So you *know* it was a long time ago.)

The obviously-bogus story did get him a little extra buzz, though, which was the whole point.

To me, more frightening than the debatable "greed", is that the media goes along with this publicity stunt of a "shortage". These products are not developed on a last-minute whim; they have been in development for a long time, and manufacturing could certainly accomodate the demand. But at least some eBay entrepreneurs get the chance to make some holiday cash, Sony gets loads of free advertising, and happy game players get the (expensive) thrill of playing Madden Football weeks before some others (there's something to look back on when you are on your deathbed years from now).
Even our local NPR station gave about 10 minutes on this story and reviews of the game device; at this point, they should just take the damn advertising money and cut down on the pledge drives.
