If it's sulphur, we use it in the Lowcountry to scatter along the fence to keep snakes out.
But who knows? Perhaps take it to your high school science teacher to ID or perhaps your friendly pharmacist. They would certainly know how to dispose of it if they can identify it and it should be dumped with the bottle. Only, of course, if it's a cool bottle with potential. Otherwise, get rid of it into the same place you put your turpentine rags, old paint, etc.

If it were mine, I'd transfer the contents into a ziplock bag, and take the bag to a recycling center. They will know how to properly dispose of it.

Thanks everyone!
I took it to the shed and carefully poured into a Ziploc freezer bag. As I poured it, a bit of paper appeared. After I sealed the bag, I manipulated the powder so I could read the paper....Sulphur.

At least you now know it is not illegal. Your story reminds me of an experience we had. My sister bought a bear at a thrift store. Looked new, made in China with tags. The bear was holding a little green purse. She noticed that the purse seemed to have something inside so she picked out the stitches that held it closed and out fell a small plastic bag full of white powder. She called a policeman she knows and asked if she should bring it in. He told her just to flush it since it would only cause trouble and paper work and they would have no way to trace it. We still wonder what it was and are glad she did not sell it without checking. -----o----o----o----o----o----o----o----o

This reminds me of the news story I heard this weekend. This lady bought a large Bratz doll off of ebay and somehow (not quite sure how) they found that the head was full of marijuana! You talk about a pot head!! Okay I know that was cheesy but this just reminded me of that story. You never know what you are going to find.

My sister took a picture of the bear with her "stash" before she ditched it. As you can see it was not a casual thing to stitch it up in the purse.
