OK this is new to me. I buy a lot from eBay UK. Items come up all the time in my search that are on eBay UK and I bid and buy with no problem. I found an item I wanted in a Google search. I usually ignore the hits that are on eBay since I figure they are either over or I found them already in my daily eBay search. For some reason I clicked on this one and found exactly what I wanted. Noticed that it listed to ship "worldwide" so thought there was no problem. Tried to watch it and it came up as guest. When I tried to sign in it said my log in was invalid. Does this mean that I have to register with a different ID on eBay UK? Why can I usually bid and buy without an eBay UK ID? I have my default set to search all eBay. If they ship worldwide it does not sound like they don't sell to the US.

It also worries me that I may have missed a lot of things I want that would come from the UK and not show in my searches. I don't mind registering again but don't understand why this is happening.

Hi Photo ... The only thing I can suggest is sign in to Ebay UK and then copy the item number in the search box. It should work for you that way. Maybe it's the secondary link from google that is glitching up ebay.

Try signing in at ebay.com. Then proceed to to the ebay.uk link at the bottom of the page. You do have to sign in again.

Then I would search the item # on ebay.uk.

You should have no problem.

It does not work. It tells me my sign in information is invalid.

I want to snipe this auction and I know eSnipe will not be able to place my bid. I can't even ask the seller a question. Do I have to register on the UK site? Can I use the same info or does it need to be different? I have not looked at eSnipe yet to see if I can set it to log on to a particular eBay. This just seems strange to me.

No, you don't. All the various eBay sites share the same login servers and your user ID and password is valid worldwide (all the more reason to safeguard it). I suspect you may have mistyped your user ID or more likely your password. If you are the sole user of your computer, you can automate logins via your browser's Password manager. Saves me a great deal of time and grief as I'm always bidding and/or selling on eBay.de, eBay.com.au, eBay.fr, eBay.ch, eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie, etc.

Why can I usually bid and buy without an eBay UK ID? I have my default set to search all eBay. If they ship worldwide it does not sound like they don't sell to the US.

See above answer. A seller can ship worldwide yet still exclude fraud/spam prone areas such as the USA, Africa, China by checking the appropriate boxes on eBay's listing form. Not all UK-based sellers are savvy with international (including those within the EU) sales and I occasionally have to do some hand holding or seller education on "best practises for international sales"

Items from the UK should show in your WORLDWIDE ebay.com non-category-specific search. If you are searching within specific categories, items from other countries will often not show because they do not map to the US categories. I have never had trouble logging in to the UK ebay site with my US registered user name. Did you ever log in with a typo to the UK site and have password manager remember the log in, defaulting to it now?

OK it gets weirder although I think the current problem is solved. If I log into the US site with FireFox and search for that item number on the UK site it comes up and lets me bid or send mail without signing in again but if I use Safari (my usual Mac browser) on this item it requires a new sign in for UK although it has not done that on other UK items I tried.

Pixiamom is right. I was typing my password wrong since my computer is set to autofill but it was autofilling on the US and it was right. So I don't understand why it was wrong when it autofilled on the UK site on Safari. I still don't understand the difference.

I want to be sure that eSnipe works when the time comes so guess I may have to snipe the old fashioned way to be sure.

Thanks for the help.

FireFox 1.x/2.x on Mac/PC supports multiple logins for eBay, so the problem was probably a mistyped password or ID. You can view them in Preferences> Privacy> Passwords> View Saved Passwords then click Show Passwords button so you can see the plaintext passwords and spot your typo, and delete it. Next time you sign in to eBay.co.uk, it'll prompt you for a ID and password. Type in the correct password and it'll remember it.

NOTE: Safari 1.x/2.x is not well supported on eBay so that may well be part of the problem. eBay is standardizing on supporting MSIE and FireFox. Opera and Safari users are left out in the cold.

I was typing my password wrong since my computer is set to autofill but it was autofilling on the US and it was right. So I don't understand why it was wrong when it autofilled on the UK site on Safari. I still don't understand the difference.

Safari and FireFox do NOT share the same passwords (even under Mac OS X which can share them via it's built-in KeyChain). Your Safari browser has an AutoFill feature (under Preferences> AutoFill then click Edit button to the right of User names and passwords to view the plaintext and remove any typos. Next time you sign in to eBay.co.uk, it'll prompt you for your ID and password. Type in the correct ID and password and Safari will remember it.

As to whether your eSnipe will work, you should check the listing's Ship to locations on eBay.co.uk. If the seller ships to the USA then your bid will likely be accepted.

Counting down to 2007!

The listing says "Worldwide" on shipping. I wrote the seller and they will ship to the US. My worry was that I buy items listed on eBay UK all the time and have never had to sign in again before this item.

esnipe DOES work for UK - I asked that once to the esnipe people and I've used it a couple of times sucessfully. BUT you have to remember the UK Euro versus the USA dollar and bid accordingly.

You don't bid in Euros but in USA $$ dollars. It works out to be in USA dollars is almost twice as much as the UK Euros.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the SHIP TO locations.

Shipping cost is a B*tch though!

The United Kingdom still uses Pounds Sterling (£ or GBP), but you got the exchange rate correct. The Euro (€ or EUR) is used in most of Western Europe (except Switzerland) and is making rapid inroads in Eastern Europe. The Euro is the national currency of the world's single largest market.

You don't bid in Euros but in USA $$ dollars. It works out to be in USA dollars is almost twice as much as the UK Euros.

Most of the online auction sniping sites make you enter the maximum price you are prepared to pay in the currency of the target site not your local currency. Otherwise a $200 bid on an item that usually commands upwards of £200 ($400) would likely fail. Conversely a UK bidder on a U.S.A. auction bids in US Dollars ($ or USD). Some of the auction snipers convert your intended bid back into your local currency as a guide to what you'll pay...

Whatever it was may have been a temporary glitch. Today when I click on the auction and go to the UK site it does not ask me to log in again. I really don't understand but feel more secure about the item I really want to bid on.

As I said I bid and buy things from the UK site almost as much as from the US so I often figure the bid I want in British pounds and place it in eSnipe. My questions was "Why do I have to sign in again on the UK site after I have already signed in on the US site for this auction when I have never had to do that on the many dozens of auctions I have bid on before?"

Different eBay site so different cookies. All the various eBay sites share the same login servers and your user ID and password is valid worldwide, but you need to login on each site at least once every day. On some eBay sites you may need to login more frequently, often if you haven't clicked the checkbox next to "Keep me signed in"...

Happy 2007 everyone!
