I always thought the second chance offer was if the actual winner of the item didn't pay, or backed out of the deal, or seller had more than one of the item? Lately I have been getting quite a few second chance offers, not for what the items sold for, but what I bid on them. Is this an automatic option?

Who would do this? If one of my items sold for X amount and I had more, I would list another one, not send second chances at much less...

For example, I bid $350 max bid for a lot. The winning bid was over $1000. I got a second chance offer for the $350, however there were 4 other bidders that bid more than I did and less than the winner.

It seemed fishy, as the seller wouldn't reply through ebay. The second chance offer actually stated "you must contact the seller at ..and had their email address... for this offer."
That message was in my ebay, so I did. But he/she absolutely would not reply through ebay, so I didn't go through with it.

Thoughts?

the other 4 bidders who bidded higher than you get second chance offer as well.
Not responding thru ebay ?could be trying to avoid paying FVF if you accept the offer.

There is a bit of fraud going around with bogus 2nd chance offers going out to people.

Real Second Chance offers come through eBay's Message Center and are a personalised offer to buy that item you previously bid on (or an identical one) at a Fixed Price on eBay.

No need to swap emails back and forth with the seller. You can accept the offer (in the Fixed Price listing) or ignore it. The seller will have to pay FVF on the offer if you accept but there's no listing fee. (I used to use Second Chance offers quite often when my items got good prices.)

Thanks for the replies. I think it was someone trying to avoid FVF fees. I didn't do it anyway, found a similar lot and bought that.

That does make sense, agit. I didn't think about the FVF fees and the second chance offer - that would save the listing fees on higher priced items. Good tip!

Thanks all!

If you look at sellers that do a lot of high ticket items they warn they NEVER do 2nd chance offer. There is a lot of fraud involve with them. Ebay should consider getting rid of that option all together.

It's legite. Any reasonable seller will record who is bidding and contact you at the price that you bid. I agree with this seller, if you want to get frauded, go through ebay. If you want a great deal, respond to him/her directly via e-mail. Do however, check out their feedback before accepting any type of offer.

If we respond thru Ebay, does the dialogue get recorded on item description page?
If so,anyone who search past auction will find out why pay $1000 when you can get it at $300??

The $1000 bid may have been a shill bid, only really had one item. The rest were not real bidders, or the other 2 or 3 in front of you had already declined, but the top bidder was shill.

Update:

The first offer was legit. It was through ebay, and in my messages.

The second offer I received last night was a scam! Not in my messages. I forwarded it to ebay and they confirmed it was a scam.

Should I inform the seller of this? Or is the seller in on it? It seems odd that I got an email with the exact same offer after declining the first one. Maybe someone hacked their account?

The email was the exact same as the original, except the email address was different... and because I noticed it, I realized something was wrong. That, and I had already declined the second chance offer.
