Our girl gets only hypo allergenic dry food but the news about the pet food recall really made us sit up and take notice. My sister panicked when she heard the brand that she gives her dogs mentioned on a TV newscast. It is not on the web site list of recalled brands so it seems to be OK.
I know there are a lot of you who are as crazy about your pets as we are.
In case you missed the link for the list of brands:

I've never been affected by a food recall until the last one for salmonella in peanut butter. I was pretty smug because I always buy JIF (which wasn't affected) unless there is a terrific sale. I checked anyway and there it was - Peter Pan with the affected lot number. So glad my kid was on a ham sandwich streak for his school lunch. I threw it out unopened and later regretted it - the homeless scavenge our garbage daily. Should I have layered it with kitty poop?

Apparently the food that was recalled was only the gravy type with bits of meat that came in pouches and cans. Interestig that my cat was eating one brand on the list in Dec when I took him to the vet. Had extremely loose stools and his UA was not too good. Was given Flagl and cephalexan and put on a prescription diet. Have no way of knowing if the food was at fault but the vet did mention it at the time and this was long before the recall.

In addition to the list at menufoods, Proctor and Gamble announced that it too was recalling some batches of the "Select Bites" and other wet Iams and Euka brands. I just fed my cats a pouch of one of the recalled batches this am (they seem to be ok but I am keeping watch for symptoms).

Neglus,
I have to ask the question everyone will want to ask when they read the above post:
Why you would feed your cats something that you knew was on a recall list?
Is the potential health risk worth the $1.89 the food costs?
We're dealing with one cat who has the early stages of renal failure now, but he's been on Science Diet prescription food for more than a year now - so it's not from these foods.

Wayne - I didn't know it was on a recall list when I fed it to my cats! I am not that cheap!!
The recall list provided at the website did not include IAMS so I thought I was safe. It was only later I learned that IAMS had its own recall.
I used the first pouch of a 12 pouch carton and will not use the rest of the pouches.
PS: AT this point I wouldn't trust ANY wet catfood (or dogfood ) of this type until I confirmed that the brand was safe (don't rely on the menufoods list because that isn't the whole story)

We ate the Peter Pan Peanut Butter and didn't have any problem. I trashed the rest too then found I could have taken it back for a refund.

The point is, if you are feeding your pet wet food that has chunks of meat and gravy and is not on the menufoods list, be PROACTIVE and do a search of your brand to see if they have their own recall.
ED TO ADD: I see that they have added IAMS and Science Diet to the menufoods list today. That's better!!! They weren't on it yesterday morning when it was first released.

Has anyone heard of this? I can't believe that this is true. Looks like a scare tactic to get you to buy this "vet"'s products. What do you think? If it IS true for all dog foods, I am going to have to make my own.

Wayne, if you need help treating your CRF cat or need a perspective in addition to your vet's, don't hesitate to email. Unfortunately we have a ton of experience in caring for terminally-ill fur slugs.

That article about the ingredients of pet foot is just awful. I need to start making my own dog food and cat food. My pets eart only dry with occasional table food. I always heard don't feed table food to your pets but if it is good enough for me then they deserve a treat ever now and then. So looks like I may be off the hook on doing that. It is a real shame about the pet foods and that recall. I have 4 cans of cat food that the out door cats get about 1 to 2 times a week so it is going back to store.
Mrs Irked likes to cook chicken and beef liver for our dog but we don't always get to do that. I am going to check into making home made dog food. We use Purina and never cheap foods but with all those ingredients I am now paranoid. Looks like it is chick mixed with rice ( human food) this week for out furry friends. Problem is our indoor cat really only likes dried food.

We had used Alpo and Friskies for years for our 4 cats they lived for 20 yrs. They all died from renal failure and the vet made it look like we poisoned them with this inferior foods we used pointing out the renal failure was from the food.
They did not like that i mentioned they live for 20 years.
That food is like a candy bar to give them, like pure junk food. you must use science diet for a $1 a can to keep them in tip top shape.
After the last one died we found a 2 day old cat in the yard he is 1/2yrs now and he hates all canned cat food, will not look at it. thankfully he must had a premanition that this crap would kill him.
The thing that stands out to me is that these people make the lowest low end and the highest high end foods yet they recalled most of it..
so it is just the same stuff just one cost more than the other
I can't wait till i have to go to the vet to mention to him how impressed i was with science diet cat food.

It has always bothered me that my lovely ragdoll cat Buddy would only eat dry food. Now, I am glad, it seems that it is only the cans and pouches that are affected.

No, he's not dead, just relaxing!

What would cat food be like if it was marketed directly to cats instead of to their owners? Chicken, turkey, salmon and seafood buffet would be replaced by Mouse morsel, chipmunk and baby robin flavors.

pixiamom: yes, you are right. I remember seeing a program on television about pet food manufacturers, and they tested it by how it looked and smelled to the owners. Not really a good recommendation for the pets.

My best friend Sky had a nice portion of Brisket tonight, she knows good food when she see it. Human food that all the vets tell us not to feed them, and we are supposed to feed them inferior dead parts mixed with garbage? Just who are we going to believe?
My Siamese cat likes dried and only eats a tiny bite of other human food meat about once a week or two. Very tiny bite and if he eats tuna he usually throws up so about once a month he gets a tiny bite of it only.
Amber that is a real cute cat you got, looks about as lazy as our Siamese, he too has his own baby blanket and a pet bed he likes too.

I see this AM that the company in Canada that makes all this pet food changed suppliers and now buys from China. China uses the rat killer to keep the mice out of there stock piles. So I guess this is how it got into the pet food chain??

Glassgirl, Where did you find the info on Nutro? The page you link to seems to say the dog got Mighty Dog mixed with her Nutro dry. I have searched the net and do not find anything about a Nutro dry recall.
We feed Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice. I dont' see it anywhere on the lists but naturally I worry.
The Nutro site says "No dry Nutro pet foods, biscuits or treats are impacted" and I hope that is true and don't want to panic.
