Is it just me or is this confusing as HECK?!?!

What's the parameters for first class letter, first class flat and first class parcel. If we have a hard time with this... I can't wait to see how well the post office clerks handle it...

In addition to the first class mess, there are two versions of parcel post also.

Oh well - we'll just have to adapt.

and don't forget DIMSUM or dimension summary, it looks like anything over 84 combined inches goes for the 20 pound rate! I sure hope I am reading THAT wrong, please feel free to bash and flame me and show me I have it wrong!

hmmm... I might have found an answer to my first-class size question... here's a link:

http://digital50.com/news/items/BW/2001/07/14/20070323005360/not-the-normal-postal-rate-change-how-its-mailing-systems-can-help-businesses-of.html

Basically,

First Class Letter - #10, #9 and 6x9" envelopes that are 1/4 inch or less thick AND 3.5 or less ounces.

First Class Flat - 12x15 inch or smaller, and 3/4 inch or less thick, and 13 oz or less

First Class Parcel - larger than 12x15 OR greater than 3/4 inch thick, and 13 oz or less

Looks like I'm going to really have to re-evaluate my shipping strategy...

I sell two lines of products... vintage ads and camera accessories.

The adjustment for the vintage ads should be pretty easy. I'll just have to deal with a few things.

My smaller single ads should be able to ship via the First-Class mail flats rate (probably around 5 or 6 oz with the mailer). The increase for this isn't too bad... around $0.15 or so...

My larger ads will have to go First-class parcel, due to the large-sized mailer (just over their cut off, grrr). This is one where it hurts... the increase is going to be closer to $0.50 or so.

My ad lots will probably be over 13oz, so they'll go parcel post or priority. Probably going to be around a $0.40-0.60 hit.

It's my small photography accessories that are going to take a real beating though... I've got many that are under an ounce that ship for the $0.52 rate ($0.39 + $0.13 surcharge). SOME may qualify for the first-class flats rate... at $0.80... but many are going to be larger than 3/4 thick, making them $1.13 each. That's over a 200% increase!!!!

I'm not too happy with these changes, and don't think that there was enough time given on this announcement....

For those sellers who do international business the post rate increase are massive.

They have eliminated the smaller flat rate Global Priority envelope with only the larger envelope available for $11.

you can use the domestic priority envelopes and boxes all based on weight. they added a flat rate box at 20# max for $37. they have eliminated the M bag and economy parcel post.

This will just about destroy the ability for sellers to send stuff overseas and get some tracking and not cost more than the items you sold.
Registered mail will start at $10.40 and going up from there.

This will now play into the hands of the scammers, this and Pay Pal's refusal to have confirmed address in countries that they are now doing business.

So we have paypal screwing us with non confirmed address. We have e-bay screwing us because it is now next to impossible for buyers from outside the US to see our items and lastly we have the post office raising the rates to send this stuff beyond reality.

I think i am going to go back to working a regular job as this is whole process is just next to impossible to make it work any more

rpm.. I have already thought it may be best for me to discontinue International sales before May 14
This is a pretty big hike - I think they had said 15% but in such categories it is a bit more.

The only advantage we have is the currency exchange.

With e-bay doing all it can to hide our stuff we are selling at or near cost. The small GP mailer ($5.25) made sense $11 is outrageous.

I am really caught with my pants down on this because they just upped the rate in January on some of these international things.

If you go to the USPS web site they have the international filing right below the domestic version. There were only a handful of people who filed any complaints. I think this was slid in under the noses of the public.

Seeing as how the small Global Priority envelope is going to be history on May 14th,
can't we just ship the small items in a small bubble mailer and ship them overseas as "Air Mail Letter Post"?

Has anyone worked out what a regular letter from the US to Canada now costs please?

Northwoodsguy,

I don't think so... it looks like they're getting rid of airmail letter post too. It's going to be replaced with "First Class Mail International", and has a maximum weight of 4 pounds. There are SIX different international rate groups for each weight. The prices range (depending on which rate group) from $0.61-$0.90 for one ounce... up to $15.46 - $29.60 for 64 ounces. Depending on what you're shipping it COULD be less than the current small global priority mailer... but not likely. For example, the rate groups 3, 4, and 5 will all cost $5.40 to ship just 6 ounces. Already, that's more than the small global mailer!

plus the small global mailer had some limited tracking in Europe and Asia.

I used about 500 of these a year they have never lost one item. with regular airmail i lost about 25% of the items i send

So what is going to happen to all our store listings? Will we have to end, edit and relaunch them all? Is Vendio and Ebay going to update their shipping calculators? and when? Will we have to input dimensions if we use the shipping calculators? I use Stamps.com and haven't heard anything from them regarding the new increase yet. This is much more than just a little price increase, this could change the way we do business.

It will change mine --- I will have to change all the Insurance rates on the store auctions.

I will have to increase S/H or eliminate International sales.

I am working on taxes now , will think about that later

That is the reason I posted this.
It is going to take effect May 14. It was signed March 26th.

Endicia has emailed their customers, I got my email yesterday. Endicia said their software would be ready and would automatically change May 14th to the new rates. Also if it is the case that one has older software , they would be alerted to update.

Surely, Stamps will have their software ready , also they should email their customers

Yes, this is a big hike .... especially for International

I found this interesting note at the USPS site under International FAQ's

Additionally, online shippers will qualify for discounts of up to ten percent when paying postage online through usps.com and authorized postage vendors.
