Hey all,

I've got a question for those in the know. My b/f lives in the country where there isn't any DSL or cable. When I try to list on his computer with dial-up, it is so slow. I know, I'm spoiled with my DSL. Is there anyway to speed it up? Are there any ISPs out there that are quicker for dial-up? Or perhaps a different modem? Or, well, anything I can do to get it to move faster?

He has a new Dell computer with a Pentium 4 processor, so it is pretty quick. But once we get online, zzzzzzzzzzz ...

Try checking with your local phone company. You would have to get ahold of a live person, the online things to check for dsl availability aren't accurate. My local phone guy told me I could get dsl, all he has to do is replace the old phone box with a new one. When I check the phone web site, it says not available in my area, due to my box being the old style.

Good idea, Jake! I'll give them a call and see what they say. I'll also call the cable company and see what they say, but I doubt they have cable out there.

What's odd is that my parents live only a couple of minutes from me. DSL is in our area. However, when she called to order DSL, she was told that she couldn't get it because there wasn't any available? I thought that was really odd.

Diane:

Do a SEARCH (google,etc) for:

"Dial-Up Accelerator"

There are a million different ones out there...

This is a software means of "speeding-up" a dial-up connection...

It's not as fast as DSL or CABLE, but the software makes dial-up better than it really is:

Here's just ONE example:

http://www.poka.com/propel/propel.html

How does it work?

Internet Accelerator is designed to provide maximum acceleration for the Web sites you visit regularly.

So, the more you surf, the faster your favorite pages will load!

Specifically, Internet Accelerator speeds up the delivery of Web pages four ways:

Compression. Internet Accelerator delivers text and graphics more efficiently, using a proprietary compression technology that significantly reduces the size of Web pages and page elements sent to your browser.

Caching. Internet Accelerator improves upon your browser's caching ability. Internet Accelerator intelligently retains and reuses Web pages and page elements that have previously been sent to your PC. That's why the longer Internet Accelerator is in use on your PC, the faster your Web pages will load.

Persistent Connections. Internet Accelerator uses proprietary techniques to carefully manage and optimize the communication between your modem and our network of servers through a persistent connection. This eliminates the time wasted re-establishing and closing TCP/IP connections.

Optional Content Filtering. Internet Accelerator lets you block unsolicited content, such as pop-up ads and in page ads, which contributes to long wait times.

How fast is it?

Performance Boost

With Internet Accelerator, Web pages load an average of 3 to 5 times faster. The more regularly you visit specific Web sites, the better the performance you will receive.

Unfortunately, I can't get DSL or cable in his area. I just checked. The accelerator sounds like a good idea. However, I found something called satellite internet. Does anybody know anything about it? It's a bit pricey but it doesn't look like he'll be getting either DSL or cable in the foreseeable future. It may be worth it for me to go this route, but I want to get more information.

Thanks.

Provided your b/f can access the interlink at 56k then listing on eBay shouldn't be too much of a challenge. If however he's way out in the boonies where the telephone lines are moss covered and sagging to waist height, then it might be a challenge... In that case interlink over satellite to the ISP might be an idea or if he's within 8 kms/5 miles of a WiFi hotspot then cheap or free alternatives are available. I'd need to know more to give more informed advise.

Earthlink has the accelerator feature which they claim allow a user to surf 5 times faster, and it has an offer to try it for 6 months at half price.

Diane:

DIRECTWAY is now HUGESNET:

http://tinyurl.com/j3uam

Most of my friends who switched from cable TV to satelitte TV have switched BACK to cable TV because the sats go wacky with every breeze...

Just a thought...

PLUS, the prices I've seen are WAY above DSL or CABLE...

Thanks Agit. I don't know how to answer your question. It is pretty much flat out here with some trees here and there. It's not heavy boonies, but considered country because it's mostly cow farmers and orange groves. He has about 3 acres. Not too many trees. 56k for some reason is very slow.

Tom ... I know what you mean. I was checking on it and it's like direct tv. Everytime it rains, you lose the satellite connection. I figure I can keep dial-up for when I lose the connection (which will be every single day during the summer months, as you know what Fla is like in the summer). I don't know what else to do though. His area isn't even slated for cable or dsl.

Yes, hwa, I know about earthlink and it may work a little bit faster, but I'm trying to find something that will be ALOT faster. I'm terribly spoiled by DSL.

This site has been around forever. It lists ISPs world wide. Great site.

I don't believe you told us who the b/f does use at the moment? That might help in our suggestions. Is it aol by chance? If so, I've found aol in rural areas to be agonizingly slow, only matched by earthlink and closely followed by bellsouth.

Not to be nosy, but this is the b/f's computer at his house in the sticks, right? You still have your own at home with DSL, right? If that's correct, perhaps you may want to start with simple/inexpensive and reversible actions unless you're moved in and plan on being there listing up a storm 24/7 for a good while. And have you thought about listing off line and simply uploading in a batch in which case it doesn't matter really how fast the connection is unless it times out of course.

JMHO.

Actually the most common problem with country line is that they are old copper and not properly maintained. Also if he's too distant from the nearest exchange then the connection is likely poor. I'm in NZ and a lot of farmers hereabouts complain about slow connection on dialup. Fortunately there are special 56k modems designed for rural conditions - check on (you guessed it) eBay.

Other things that affect rural phone lines are electric fences - often a problem in cow country where they are used to control grazing. You can detect them by driving parallel to the overhead phone lines with an AM radio blazing away. When the reception gets bad or stutters then you're near a 'shorting' or 'semi-grounded' electric fence. Ask the farmer to fix it (it'll save on his electric fence's battery life).

Hope this helps.

Bizzy, I have been pleasantly surprised with Netzero's dial up service.

I use cable at home but had to find an alternative for all the time I spend in Kentucky and Tennessee.

Netzero is only $ 9.95 a month and the accelerator was free. Service has been reliable where ever I travel and I can find a local dial number for the majority of areas.

Only problem I have noticed is the a slow down in speed when I am in large city areas during working hours. Rural areas have been fine.

Check them out www.netzero.com

Classic, not sure if your kidding or not, a little hard to tell with you.

Dial up is connecting to the Internet by using your telephone line.

Hi. Dial-up is no better than the phone lines it uses. We live in the country and use satellite. It IS expensive, but if you have bad phone lines, it's the only way to go. You can lose a signal in bad weather, but not always. I keep hoping more people will build homes out here so it would be worth it for Cable or DSL to run a line.
