On a recent auction, had over 300 hits and 10 bookmarks...and nary ONE bid. One of these days, I may learn to not get my hopes up and accept the reality that hits and bookmarks do NOT translate into actual bids! Sigh...

Usuualy with 6 or more bookmarks or watch this item, you get at least one bid.
But sales have been slow,I wonder if the subprime mortgage is the culprit>
I remember one lady posted on this forum that her banker takes her Ebay sales proceeds into considteration when approving her mortgage!

You don't have enough auctions running if you're agonizing over hits and bookmarks.
Suggest getting a regular line of merchandise you can always have going on eBay, then filling it with the odd things you always seem to be finding.
There are tons of business opportunities available. Talk to people you know about the kinds of things they look for on eBay. A conversation with a friend got me started on book selling. Despite the huge number of book sellers on eBay and the fact that my prices are way higher than anyone else's, I get sales because I provide lots of information about the book.
I always thought book buyers were looking for the lowest price. Turns out that isn't so.

I agree with fluffy. Plus, the more auctions you run in your category, the higher the hits and bids. The one thing I've learned in the last few years is that the more auctions I run, the higher the bids. If I don't have that many auctions up, then my bids suffer.

That's because on a fundamental level, each of your auctions is an advertisement for itself and for every one of your other auctions (through the bolded View Seller's Other Items link).

I agree Diane,
So many of the small sellers leave money on the table when they only list 1 to 5 items.
The difference between final bid for each individual item when you have 5 auctions listed versus 25 auctions can add up to $100's of dollars.
example: It seems that if I only list 5, I am lucky to see 20% sale-thru and final bid is probably 60% less than when I have 20 or more listings. When I list at least 20 listings, my sale-thru goes up to over 50%.
On my Stores account, I see my weekly sale- thru greatly improve if I have at least 25 active auctions or fixed priced items in addition to my store items.
A note on Watchers- Many of your watchers may not even be signed in when they put your item on the watch list. If they are not signed in, the item goes to an eBay guest list and they probably won't see your item again. The guest list does not automatically get added to your watch list once you log in.
Waste of time for the potential buyer and pretty much makes the watcher count on your listing invalid.

I have made more money on books than anything I ever sold on E-Bay. It takes the right ones, and yes you have to write a good ad. The same goes for music, if you don't list the songs, you will have no sales. There is money to made in selling DVDs and music CD's but they take extra effort to move them.
