I was in the honor society in college, and our pins had a torch. Can't help you any further than that. I'd guess the three jewels represent three years. . . .

Then the jewels for years of membership theory doesn't make sense - the earliest you can be a member of NHS (at least when I was in school and at my daughters' school) is as a junior. Maybe it's different for 4 year high schools?

It's been so long, I don't remember what year of college I was inducted into the honor society (the equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa, we didn't have one of those chapters yet). I'm not even sure where the pin is, now!

Could the torch be a company logo? Insurance companies come to mind, and then the jewels might stand for years of service (maybe 5 years for each jewel?)
