Sold a set of drapes. In the listing, I state "We also have the valance in stock (valance ships for free if purchased with the drapes)."

The buyer emailed me tonight wanting to know where her free valance is. She did not purchase the valance.

Can I be more clear? My intent is that if the buyer purchases the drapes and the valance together, I will combine the purchase and waive the shipping cost on the valance.

I understand your intent but it probably would have been crystal clear if you had said "matching valence available for $XXX. No additional shipping charges".

I can see where the confusion comes in. Most buyers don't read the ad all the way through. I think a good many of them flunked reading comprehension.

I too misread the statement.

Thank you all for the objective look. I have sent her the valance, and will re-write the text for the next time I list.

I read it correctly. I get so sick of people misreading the text because they are ignorant or do not bother at all. I have sold PATTERNS, and state the word pattern several times and have had people think they were getting the finished product or the doll wearing the dress on the pattern. HUH

fleecies,

I'm glad that you changed the wording to make it more clear, but I personally think the first version was okay.

If you were selling drapes with a valence, you would simply have said that. You didn't. The title, I'm sure, wasn't "Drapes w/ valence" which is what one would expect if that's the sales unit. "valence ships for free if PURCHASED with the drapes" [emphasis mine] doesn't lead me to think that I'm buying drapes and valence.

Blueyes29's version does make it absolutely clear, but there will be some shmuck who thinks that the drapes are free if you buy a valence.

Sometimes, you just can't win.
