I ran across a pic Neglus downloaded on my Mom's computer of a stoneware matchholder from my Grandmother's estate. Grandma collected antiques from the teens on, many more exquisite than this, but this was always one of my favorites - it was always beside Grandpa, who used it as a matchholder/matchstrike. I took it to Antiques Roadshow and was stuck with the doll appraiser (hair in a ponytail, earring - can't remember his name - who glanced at it - said it was South American folk art circa 1950's (what the #*#*)? Does anyone have a more intelligent guess on origin/date? I have searched for years on eBay and haven't found a similar piece. It has a basket on his back to hold the matches, no identifying marks that I could see. It is now tucked away and this is the only view I can find, although I know Neglus took more of them. TIA

Wonderful is right. I'm thinking Eastern European/Hungarian, Slovakian. Not African, not Asian, probably not North American or South American. Do let us know when you get an answer! That appraiser at the Roadshow obviously didn't know what he was talking about, so like lots of people (like when you ask for directions), if they don't know, they put on their smartest face and give information anyway.
