We just enjoyed a visit from Neglus who ran across a nifty way to save time and wear-and-tear on the scanner... Leave the cover open! The quality of the scan is the same, the items aren't "nudged" by moving the cover. The only difference is that you get a black background instead of a white background, an effect I prefer when scanning light items. I can't believe we didn't find this out earlier!

The first thing I do when I get a new scanner is remove the cover and throw it away.
A piece of colored paper works just as well as a background.

Ditto! I never close the cover and for my ads which have writting on the reverse, I use a black construction paper. This keeps the "other side" from showing thru.

I remember you saying that, Fluff, when I bought a new scanner because the cover was broken on my old one. I tried a piece of paper and a cloth but always ended up moving the cards around a little when putting the paper or cloth on top of the cards. Ironically I did buy the new scanner last winter but decided a few weeks ago to see if I could save time by leaving the cover open - it works! You do have to close the scanner if the card is curled a little. Pixia - my background at home is kind of reddish as opposed to black at Mom's house.

We scan 4 postcards at once - that's probably why the paper doesn't work as well as just leaving it open. One card or another is bound to move a little.
BTW - nearly every crooked scan can be straightened in IRFAN using "Custom/Fine Rotation" (CTRL-U) under the "Image Tab"

Sorry about the double post. I don't know why that happened. I didn't hit the post button twice. (At least I don't think I did).

Can someone tell me how leaving the scanner lid open saves wear and tear? I scan 4-5 hours a day, and I have gone through about 5 scanners since I started eBay. On the lid of my scanner it says "Do not open during use", so I have never done so.

I am not sure it saves on scanner's wear and tear but it does save on cover's wear and tear (of course if you don't use the cover that's a moot point). I just do it because it's faster.
My scanner doesn't have that message but I think as long as you don't gaze at the light it couldn't hurt. (and I am the one who never removed those tags on pillows etc that said "don't remove under penalty of law..."

I always keep it covered when I am not using my scanner,so it wont get scratched .
My scanner is also my copier.
You wont like it if it is scratched.

I have a cardboard box that I use to cover the scanner glass when not in use. It doesn't touch the glass.
It also provides a black backgrond for times when I don't use a colored sheet of paper. Sometimes it takes a while to get a piece of jewelry positioned just so on the glass and I don't want to touch it with anything for fear of it moving.

Fluff, what background color do you get when you don't use a paper or box cover? I get a near perfect black with the cover open on my Epson scanner.
