OMG I just got back from rushing my Yorkie Stetson to the vet. A pygmy rattlesnake bit him in the face. Please see him calm peaceful and healing. They are having to keep him overnight and he does not do well in a crate at ALL. Last time they kept him overnight he was hoarse from barking all night.
Any and all prayers appreciated.

well it's 9:00 pm and the vet just called and said that she didn't think she would have to give him the anti venom ($400+ but that didn't matter). She said he had swollen more but that he was doing well.
Pets. sigh.

Just what is a pygmy rattlesnake?! Never heard of it, and you might live in another part of the country instead of in the west? How awful for you and Stetson!

Glassgrl, hope the little fellow continues to do well. I can certainly relate since we are dealing with the aftermath of very serious surgery with our Lacy.

Stetson is still very swollen but he's glad to be home. Here's some pictures of after the snake bite. They shaved his neck and the swelling has moved down from his face to his neck. The vet said not to be surprised if it doesn't keep migrating.
Thanks for everyone's prayers!

I know everybody cares more about dogs than snakes but some did ask so in the interest of bio diversity, here’s some info:
"Pygmy Rattlesnake is found throughout the state of Florida. The species extends north to eastern North Carolina and west to eastern Texas and southern Missouri
Pigmy rattlesnakes, as their name suggests, are miniature rattlesnakes. Sometimes called "ground rattlers," these snakes are so well camouflaged that they are rarely seen. Adult snakes are usually only 18 inches long or smaller. When coiled on the forest floor, they are only the size of a loblolly pinecone. These snakes have a small delicate rattle that is not much wider than the tip of the tail. When they vibrate this rattle, it sounds very much like an insect buzzing; some people have difficulty hearing the rattle.
Although they are small, "pygmys" are feisty and are apt to strike if molested. Fortunately, these snakes have small venom glands and don’t inject large quantities of their potent venom when they bite. Few if any people have died from the bite of pygmy rattlesnakes, although bites from these small snakes can be serious. Pygmy venom is very effective for killing the small frogs, lizards, small mammals and insects they prey upon.
Pygmys probably mate both in the spring and autumn. They give birth to 3-9 babies in late summer. The newborn snakes are so tiny that they could easily coil up on the face of a half dollar.
Pygmy rattlesnakes live in longleaf pine-scrub oak habitats. They share these habitats with reptiles like southern hognose snakes, coachwhip snakes, fence lizards, five-lined skinks and many others. Since these sandhills are home to such a diversity of fauna and flora, they are an essential part of our southeastern ecosystem"
Sorry the little fellow found one of these beasts and glad he is doing better. Good thing it wasn’t a timber rattler!
peace,
Don

Stetson is fine. He's still chasing snakes though He was just chasing a black snake aka black racer 2 days ago.
I was amazed at how much swelling is due to a snake bite. It took quite a few days to go down and about 4 days before he felt like barking again.
I don't know how to get rid of snakes or how to chase them off. That was the first poisonous snake I'd seen although we have a lot of non poisonous ones. We don't have a yard per se but more of a wooded area. We've tried the moth ball thing but because it's Florida there's always the rain to deal with.
We are trying to discourage him from chasing anything. His favorite past time was lizards. He's just a true terrier.
Thanks for asking and thanks for all the good wishes and prayers.

Great to hear that, glassgrl. I hope he stops chasing snakes. He's the king of his domain and I guess he just doesn't want to share it with those pesky snakes.

They say cats keep snakes away, but don't know for certain, do know my neighbors got snakes a lot but we never had any in our yard as long as there were cats hanging around but since I took care of the cat situation it remains to be seen. In case you are wondering I relocated the cats to another city well rural area, I didn't want them harmed.
