Could someone advise me regarding contents stolen out of a package I mailed?

My customer received an empty large envelope with a stamp on it to the effect of "received no contents."

She described my exact envelope and where the tape was on it and there was extra tape along the bottom and the back seam (I don't put tape there).

This probably isn't worth my time, but I want to check with the post office regarding this anyway.

Is there a grievance form? I don't know at what point the contents were taken--at the PO, or if they were taken out of my own mailbox--I just want to look into this further.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for your help.

Update: The customer got back to me and said the package had looked tampered with and that they tried to glue the back up.

I believe there's a rifled package report you can file, but I'm not sure. It's possible that they tried to run the envelope through the machine and the rest is history. I've received envelopes that were shredded with no contents. Just an apology postcard and a shredded envelope in a plastic baggy. It stinks.

One of my buyers received a package I sent, still all taped up, but a large hole punched in the top, and a 1 lb skein of yarn missing. It looked as if something had punched in the top and just pulled it out. I decided to just send a replacement. Too much hassle to try and complain from Canada.

Report it to your local post master.

This website has most of the details:
Protecting Yourself from Mailbox Vandalism

BTW, the 1510 is now history.

"Customers who wish to report suspected mail theft or rifling must now call 800-ASK-USPS or go to the Postal Inspection Service’s Web site and input the information online at postalinspectors "

Just used the number a few weeks ago to report a resort PO that was not returning mail. My missing package showed up 6 weeks later. I guess I ticked someone off. The package was smashed flat.

Title of post is pretty libelous especially when the poster states:

"Is there a grievance form? I don't know at what point the contents were taken--at the PO, or if they were taken out of my own mailbox--I just want to look into this further."

Could have been stolen by someone walking by your mailbox. Doesn't make USPS a suspect. Can you prove that it occurred while in the hands of USPS? If you dropped the item off at your local PO station, then its possible but not if the item was removed out of your mailbox waiting for pickup.

99.9% of my packages are shipped directly from the PO, that's why I want to "look into this further."

How many criminals are going to take the package out of the mailbox and then put the empty back in?

I know if I were to do it, there would be no way in heck that I would ever think to go back to the scene of the crime to put an empty envolope back. It would hit the trash some where else.

Please understand that I am not accusing the PO of anything. From my original post, I just wanted to check the situation out. I don't have the facts regarding WHERE or WHEN it was taken. I just thought I would talk with the PO to see what my options are and what they suggested. I mail virtually 99.9% of my packages dropped off directly at the PO.

If I were to take something from a mailbox, I would ditch the envelope too, which makes me think it could have POSSIBLY been done at the PO.

Three weeks ago my sister-in-law went out to take the trash out and on her way found mail from the people across the street laying on the ground, with a little further looking she found 4 envelopes 2 open and 2 not opened. Come to find out the opened ones were payments and one was for over 200$, the check was missing as was the other one. Seems who ever is stealing mail out of mail boxes is not in a hurry to get out of there as they took the time to take the checks and then just threw the mail on the ground probably by the vehicle they were in by the dumpster that was across the street and down a little from where it was supposed to be mailed from.

We heard that this is becoming very popular with thiefs, they change the checks To field and cash them. So be weary of putting your mail in your box to be picked up. We try to watch and not put mail out until the post man is expected and when we put ebay items out we watch for him and take them out when he arrives. He always goes down the street then back up to our house so we usually don't miss him and he is punctual.
