What the ......!!!! I knew the post office had changed some things but I hadn't discovered until just recently that they have changed the sizes on what they consider a package versus a large package. Highway robbery is what it is. I took a box up on the weekend and was surprised to find that it was now considered to be a large package. I paid the additional postage out of my pocket. Now today I shipped a box that NO WAY would I consider it to be a large box and AGAIN it is considered to be a large package. I mean this is 15 1/2" long, 13" wide and 11 1/2" tall. That is the big deal with that? How can I ship anything anymore?

Several threads on this earlier I believe. Any priority mail package over a cubic foot (12x12x12) is considered a large package IF it goes to zones 5-8 (west coast) How to avoid it? Ship with someone else if it won't fit into those dimensions.

You are absolutely correct. The easiest way to determine what size adds up to a cubic foot - you ask? Add up all the measurements you just provided and if it is larger than 36 (12 + 12 + 12) then it's gonna cost ya more if it's going across the country.
If it is, we opt for FedEx Ground and it usually costs significantly less than the USPS. They, too, have a "balloon" rate for a large but light item, but we haven't bumped into it yet - shipping nothing larger than 12x12x18 in a while now.

FamilyBiz,
Would that were so, but I'm afraid CUBIC foot means something different. It is the PRODUCT of length, width, and depth.
Expressed in inches, it is true that a box 12"x12"x12" is a cubic foot, but that is a special case where the total addition comes to 36. A cubic foot is actually 1728 cubic inches (12x12x12=1728).
If you had a weird box (too long for USPS, but for the sake of argument...), that was one inch high, and one inch wide, it would have to be 1728 inches long to make a cubic foot. It would be 144 feet long. The sum of the dimensions would be 1730, much more than 36, but it is still one cubic foot, just like a box 12x12x12.
In the old days, UPS used an addition method to determine dimensional weight, but that was length plus girth (i.e., L+W+H+W+H, where L is the longest dimension).

You are so correct. It still holds for items that are close to the 12 x 12 x 12 measurements - that if you go over by one inch increment, you will exceed the 1728 cubic inches that make up 1cf.
Examples could include: 12 x 15 x 9 (when added equal 36) -- but if you go to 12 x 15 x 10 (37) -- then the cubic inches = 1800 - thus more than the cubic foot allowance.
If you were at 11 x 16 x 9 = 36 and would be under the 1cf. If you go up an inch to 11 x 16 x 10 = 1760 (again more than the allowed 1728 cubic inches in that 1 cf.
It won't hold for every possible combination, but it certainly works for the size boxes we have at our availability.
Or, you could get yourself a fancy little diagram that the P.O. uses at their counters.
Unless you want to ship that 144-foot-long package... My calculations still work.

You may also want to note, as I see the OP mentioned half inches, that 12x12-1/2x11-1/2 get rounded to 12x13x12.

Due to new rules, I only sell things if they can fit into a priority box. The rest is tooo confusing.

I thought there would have been earlier threads on this subject, but with no search, how do you find them? How they ever came up with the size for a "large package" is beyond me. 15 x 13 x 12 is not that big of a box that it is cumbersome to carry. This is really going to hurt my sales. I feel like doing something totally asinine and illogical and not giving the postman a Christmas present this year.

On the www.usps.com site for any box which not a Priority box, select large package and enter the size. This will prevent unpleasant surprises at the post office.

Merrie,
You better take note as that is what this thread is about. Priority shipping.
As far as the original post. The total cubic inches would be 2317 which is way about the 1728 as per the example provided by Cash.

STONECOLD: Huh?? I know what the thread is about. I stated that I will only sell, in the future, what will fit into a standard priority box, therefore there is no confusion and no figuring sizes, etc. If it fits into a standard box, it costs what is listed on USPS website for that weight and zip code.
Am I missing something??

There is no need to limit what you sell to just sell items which will fit in the Priority boxes. On the USPS website just check large package and the other needed info and on the next page enter the demensions of the box. If Priority is too expensive then give the buyer the Parcel Post total. It works for me and the buyers are not complaining about Parcel Post. Not a problem

Thats fine, Dorrie but you still have to stand in line to mail it. As far as I know you cannot preprint shipping labels for this, only Priority Mail. That is why I switched to DHL ground. Just drop them off. DHL seems cheaper than UPS ground but wish I could print the labels and not have to hand write them.

I'm not sure, but I think you are referring to Parcel Post? If so, you can print labels for PP and for First Class if you do so through PayPal.

Any of the post office options eBay offers in their shipping module is available for printing inside PayPal -- media mail too, as well as international options. It's very convenient to be able to print customs forms, since the work is done for you, and most importantly, you're not dependent on a clerk who most likely knows less about shipping overseas than you do ...
Sent some things global express, and it was amazing that each step of the way was trackable for both Australia and Taiwan (in customs, released from customs, delivery attempted, etc.) right from the order details in the listing.

part of the problem with UPS and FedX it trying to figure all the sure charges. I have a Fed-X account, almost every time I ship by them I loose, not a business, home deliver is more + a sure charge for this and that and I thing UPS is the same. JMO

There's a button at the bottom of the FedEx ship page that will provide a pretty darn accurate cost of shipping.
FYI - Loose = the type of women my mother warned me to stay away from...
Lose = What I do with my mind when I see the misuse of apostrophes... Such as "It's and its" and "you're and your."
It's = it is
Its = possessive
You're = you are
Your = possessive

Very rarely do I get billed anything other than what Fedex tells me it's going to charge -- but if you are going to FedEx and trying to get a cost when listing without doing a specific shipment, then I can see you running into trouble. I use the shipping calculator for UPS on the listing, but use Fedex to actually ship. It's generally a couple of dollars less with FedEx.
I do use shiprush -- for eBay users at least for FedEx it's free and for DHL as well. Go to www.shiprush.com and check. It's integrated with eBay which makes it so much easier than using the website.
I really hated DHL's own website for shipping. Very cumbersome and hard to navigate. Plus found actual shipment quotes to be significantly different (lower) than billed charges too often. Especially with oversize packages, however, DHL can be quite a bit less when traveling from east to west coast.

gas - I can do all that but when I print on the 2-label 8-1/2 X 11 sheet it only prints the label on one side. I want it to print the record including the numbers, etc on the other side for my records. I usually stick it on the back of the paperwork for that transaction.
