I found this Olympic medal at a Garage sale and was able to buy it for $160. I thought I could get $250 for it (every athlete gets a medal for showing up, This was the medal from 1932

Pretty amazing! The buyer was in France.

Anyhow, The winner paid by Paypal really quick, I sent it Registered with Delivery Confirmation and Tracking, with Insurance from a Private Company. The French Post Office tried to deliver on 9-15 and nothing has been done since then. What should I do?

I would email the buyer and kindly let them know that delivery was attempted. They may have missed or forgotten about the delivery attempt notice. They may even be out of town.

Since it has only been a week, the foreign post office is rarely in a hurry to return unclaimed packages to States. They much prefer to collect the fees.

You can call the USPS and ask for a package update. They technically do not do international inquiries until 30 days after posting date but I have seen package tracking magically get updated after I inquire.

I guess I could get it from Ebay, but they are in France and I do not know if they speak English.

If they don't answer your email tomorrow, I would ask a french-speaking friend to help me make the call.

I would be screwed if I were looking for someone to speak anything but Hillbilly around here. Most of them haven't learned English yet.

I would be very reluctant to ship a high-value to France paid for by PayPal. Most of my French buyers pay by bank transfer (BIC + IBAN) or MoneyBookers (which is EU licenced). At least you have insurance as protection against a chargeback for "item not received", though not against SNAD disputes.

I shipped a $400 lamp to the UK 2 months ago and it still shows that there was an attempted delivery about 1 1/2 months ago - nothing else. I wrote and she never replied so I forgot about it.
When I called the post office they said it happens all the time that the other post office doesn't update the website information.
Maybe no new is good news.

Great news...

No feedback from the post office, but Positive Feedback from the buyer. He didn't even mind that I put Full Sales Price on the International Postage Receipt.

Glad that's over with... One ticket to the Beijing Olympics down... 3 to go.

dejapooh,

Why would he mind your putting full sales price on the customs form? That's the law.

I'm not sure, I've never sold anything that expensive overseas before (I've not sold anything that expensive period).

We get constant requests to both mark an item as a gift, and reduce its value (so that they'll pay zero or minimal customs fees).

We've now added to our auctions that customs forms will be filled out accurately, but they still ask.

My friend sent a gold coin to a buyer in France, she paid with paypal it was over 200.00, when it arrived at customs she refused to pay custom fees so it sits in customs. She goes and makes a complaint with paypal that item was never received and paypal returns all her money. So much for protection with paypal as a seller.

Now the coin is not returned and all of the money she paid was returned so my friend is out the shipping money and out the coin. He has spoken to paypal many times but they keep telling him .....the buyer never received the item so they get there money back. I wonder if he will ever get his coin back. He is totally finished using paypal for International sales and I'm beginning to feel the same way.

When shipping by International Mail, I usually ship high value items by USPS Registered Mail. There is insurance, plus secure handling of the item, plus the item will be returned (at your expense) if refused. Consider Registered Mail in the future.

toni,

Why do you think so many of us have been saying not to accept PayPal internationally? For the same reason everyone in my car has to wear seatbelts... I'm not planning on having an accident, but you never know.

PS I guess I should amend my comment. If I were a high-volume low-to-moderate-value shop, I would accept PayPal internationally. I could afford a small percentage of scams. OTOH, I'm a low-volume moderate-to-high-value shop, and a scam really hurts the month.

If you can afford to get beat every now and then, accept PayPal internationally. But by all means, be quiet about it when you get burned... you decided that it was an acceptable cost of doing business for you.

Paypal refunded her money as you dont have online trackable DC which said it has been delivered.
But if she did not pick up the coin,it would be returned to you.
I believe DSI would let you take out insurance for the seller, not the buyer.
May be someone who used DSi can shed some light on it.
