Fluffythewondercat,
Just thought I would ask if you were in danger of the fire out in California.
You have always been so thoughtful of others on the Vendio board and give insightful advice (while some may not always agree) to everyone.
My heart goes out to all those people in California. The sad part is the insurance companies will not pay just like they did in Florida and the Gulf coast.
Just wanted to check and see if I could be of any help.
You are sweet to think of me, but the firestorms are in Southern California.* Today's SF Chronicle says that many people are fleeing their SoCal homes and heading up here to stay with friends or relatives.
It seems likely there may be a bit of an exodus effect as there was with Katrina: Some people forced to relocate elsewhere found they liked the new place better and refused to return once the danger was over.
We like to talk about our traffic being bad but truly it is nothing like the 24 hour traffic jam that is Southern California in the 21st century. I myself moved up here from SoCal. I didn't need much convincing to stay.

While reading Fluffy's post my mind flashed a cartoon in the New Yorker I saw many years ago. A couple is driving down a highway past a sign that said "Norther California" on one side and "Southern California" on the other. On the northern side are Greek Temples and nymphs frolicking in fields of flowers. On the southern side is urban sprawl and fast food joints. In the caption the woman says something like "I didn't expect the contrast to be so obvious!"
Must have been at least 30 years ago that I saw it. Now how do I remember it?
Hope the situation in the fire area improves really soon and all the eBay Outlooker (and everyone else) comes out of it OK.

Glad you are ok, Jack. My daughter doesn't even know yet if their house is gone. Maybe by the weekend they can get in to see. She said the smoke was terrible. Be careful out there....
