Just curious: If he had emailed today instead of phoning, would you have reacted differently, having had time to think it over?

He had emailed, which I ignored, that prompted him to call.

I hope it isn't something like bidding and buying an eBay item for a friend? Surely that wouldn't be against any policy. I've bid on and won several porcelain collectible things that a friend asked me to get for her; the collectors, it seems, follow each other around on eBay and find out what the others are bidding on, etc.

Well, I'm sure your situation is different. Is it too late to back out of your agreement with the customer?

No Roadsmith, it wasn't. Had I my Tom-Terrific headgear on, I would have realized that the transaction was not legit.

If the request was to sell him something that is not listed on eBay outside of eBay, (such as an extra something or a duplicate, etc) I have no problem with that whatsoever.

While it might not meet the "letter" of the eBay rule, I don't think it runs counter to its intent. If you would believe eBay's rhetoric, they'd probably tell you it's to protect the buyer so that ill-intentioned "sellers" don't scam the unsuspecting lambs (I mean buyers).

In fact, they won't come out and say it's to ensure they get every fee they are due. Now, factor into this the current sell-through rates and the amount of money invested in eBay each week - and I can see more off-eBay transactions happening when possible.

You don't have to give us the "gorey" details, but atleast give us some context. Are you concerned that someone will be able to "trace" the improper transaction? Did you have something listed and they offered you an amount you thought was fair and you cancelled the listing and sold to him?

Is he shilling for a terrorist cell and you secretively located the US nuclear launch codes and handed them over in exchange for $100 and positive feedback? What?

Just trying to get a sense of how grave the issue is. You obviously want to tell someone -- so let it be us so we can empathize with you and you can move on with the fun of the season!

Pixia, just tell him that you spoke too soon without realizing it was against eBay policy.

It happened just today, back out.

No big deal that it is against eBay policy.

Unless ebay finds out somehow...
