Good old photo, but where is it from? Just on the off chance that one of the postcard sellers here might recognize it! Don't even remember where I got it, but probably New York?

Those two women's clothes will give you an idea of the time period--maybe 20s through 30s--but I have no idea where the picture was taken. Is there any writing, or a postmark, on the back?? (If the postmark is a city, perhaps the local historical society could tell you.)

Edited to add: I see that you haven't said it's a postcard, so ignore my last couple of sentences.

Thanks all -- it was a long shot, but sometimes someone will recognize something. The girls in the photo look to be ca. 1920s, and it does have a sort of exotic flair, but not Japan. Oh well.

I can't tell if this is street level or on top of a building. Can you?

This reminds me of the reflection pools created by Lord & Burnham or Lutton. They were quite the craze from 1910 through the late 20's. They would be found on estates but also on top of buildings.

Street level, only because I can see people walking on a path on the other side of the center building, and the buildings (industrial looking blocky ones) seem to be on the same level. Cleaning the dreaded eBay room here, and keep finding things I forgot I had ...

I agree with vintageads4u. It appears to be a reflecting pool. Reflecting pools are sometimes used in memorials, designed to be quiet and solemn to encourage reflection.

The Reflecting Pool near the Washington monument is another example.

It reminds me of the pool in front of the Taj Mahal in India, the building is much smaller of course, but that was a memorial.

I immediately thought of the expos in San Diego and San Francisco but could not find any corresponding postcards. It is a reflective pool.

Pixi: I have an old book here (listed on Amazon) from the San Francisco exposition, early 20th century. There's a big fountain, reflecting pool, etc., but the fountain and the buildings don't resemble the picture posted in this thread.

Roadsmith, yeah, that's what I found. Edited to add, expo pics are usually busier, so think I was headed in the wrong direction.

Don't think it's California - trees look like they are bare. I was thinking maybe Boston but don't know why Maybe in another life...

It's definitely not San Francisco.

The buildings on the left remind me of Soviet housing.

Again, thanks for your time and effort! Because so many post cards go through your hands, I thought perhaps it may trigger something in one of you paper sellers' memory. I agree that there aren't enough people in it to be a fair or exhibition; the building looks like a cross between a memorial and a train station! The trees are bare, and in the pots are some sort of trailing ivy and some sort of spiky green. Not terribly important, but you never know with the group when someone may recognize something!

Happy holidays and best wishes.

One last thought: Have you posted your question and this photo in the Collectibles board in Ebay?
