Oi!

What a crappy idea!

Having done thousands of refractions & after dispensing thousands og pairs of glasses, I shudder at this concept...

Virtually every pair of glasses I ever dispensed had to be custom adjusted to the patient's head & face (I used a hot box with tiny glass beads), and this can be VERY complicated...

What are ya gonna do? Walk into some poor Opticians store and ask for a FREE adjustment? Ai! Carrumba!

PLUS, many Rx's are very simple; but many many more are very complicated, especially PROGRESSIVE ADDITION LENSES, and for folks who have HIGH refractive errors...Some frames are inappropriate for them, and you will induce PRISM & fall on yer ass!

Geez! Go to a GOOD GUILD OPTICIAN and get a PROPER pair of eyeglasses! These ain't EARMUFFS!

Or even COSTCO! I hink it was last month that somebody like CONSUMERS REPORTS did an investigation of chains and found LENSCRAFTERS to be TERRIBLE, & COSTCO to be EXCELLENT!

Tom, I have purchased my last 3 pairs of eyeglasses from Costco, and I agree, they are excellent. Their service is great, they replace nose pieces free of charge, my last optician charged $8. I went in once to get them adjusted, and they noticed that the coating was not quite right, and they had them re-done for free. When like me you have no-line tri-focals, they can be very expensive, they are the best value we have found.

Don't normally endorse WalMart, but the one by me did a great job for me. The eye doctor there even referred a great doc at the Cleveland Clinic for my grandaughter's amblyopia. I'd never get them over the Internet. Mine always need to be adjusted. Besides, if anything goes wrong with them I can take them back and they do adjust them for me when they need it. Tom's advise is good. Our eyes are just too important!

Marcia - Is there a Union Eye Care anywhere near you? They're pretty good.

I went to America's Best Contacts and Eyeglasses. Two pairs of glasses and eye exam for $70 - hard to beat. I scheduled the appointment online but went out to suburbia for the exam and fitting. Very happy with the exam. Had to pay $25 extra for the poof test, but figured it was worth it. Much better than my previous exam at Binyon's. Two caveats: you have to wait about two weeks before your glasses come in and after the exam, the "fitter" tries to pile on add-ons without you even knowing it. I didn't agree to any add-ons. When I asked how much my total bill was, the fitter told me $209 - she assumed I wanted the thin lenses and protective coating. I was adamant that I wanted the 2-fer $70. Got them and am very happy with them.

I bought a pair of lined bifocals from them that I use for reading around the house.
During the order process you are asked to do measurements for distances.
Mine worked out fine.

well, my rx is pretty simple i think... i only wear glasses for driving (myopia) ... my prescription hasn't changed the few times i have had an exam over the past 15 years.

i was wearing my plastic framed rx sunglasses on top of my head (like a headband) and went to give an old (tall) friend of mine a greeting/hug... the glasses fell back, off my head, hit the ground and broke clean off at the nose rest part ... i see perfectly fine with them and i want the same rx put into another pair of glasses.

i'd gotten them 3 years ago at lenscrafters (and had eye exam at that time)... i bought the sunglasses and regular glasses for $271.09 (that doesn't include the eye exam payment) ....

wahhh... i just want some nice big tortoiseshell-look sunglasses, that won't dent my christmas budget! i have the prescrip and frame size on my receipt.

i went in to walmart, with rx in hand, and they won't make me glasses without having had an exam within 2 yrs. sheesh.
