We have a member on eBay's jewelry board who has sons serving over in Iraq. She is using a flickering candle as her signature. Whelp, there are a couple of nasty, mean trolls on the jewelry board who are always out to cause trouble and most try to ignore them. These trolls decided they didn't like the flickering candle and reported the member to the moderators. Now, you can have an animated signature if it's okay with that particular board. The moderators threatened to give the member a "vacation" because of these couple of trolls if she didn't remove her candle. Our solution? We now all have candles in our signatures. What are they going to do, give the entire board a vacation?

Geesh, since when should you be persecuted for showing our troops in Iraq some support. Whether you agree with the war or not, our troops still deserve support.

You say that like you think eBay can't do it.

Fluffy, I know they can do it. But, will they? I think it would be foolish since there are only two or maybe three troublemakers on the board. How would it make them look? Oops, forgot. They're not into caring about how they look anymore.

It's simple, if you don't like the "flickering" hit the Esc button. Flicking stops.

I went and looked at the Board. Unfortunately, from the point of view of someone who is not a regular there, it looks like there are a bunch of troublemakers perpetuating candle threads that have nothing to do with the subject matter of the Board.

eBay may see it that way as well. They take subject matter seriously. They even have people on staff who specialize in topics like Jewelry. If you go to eBay HQ at Hamilton and Bascom in San Jose, you'll see that various sections of the buildings have signs denoting what topic they're assigned to.

The problem with developing a little insular community in places such as eBay Boards or here at Vendio is that you don't own the playground, so you always run the risk (however small) of the landlord kicking you off the field and locking the gate behind you.

Some of those candle sig lines can be construed as political statements. We've pretty much eliminated those here in the eBay Outlook. I think it's a better place for it.
