Honest bidders should appreciate that so someone doesn't bid to win and then come here and try to jew me down.

"On Feb-18-08 at 16:36:27 PST, seller added the following information:
I would like to apologize for the use of the term "jew" in the listing. It was meant only as a common phrase and I cannot remove it now.My apologies to all whom it may offend or have offended.M.D."

cant remove it
????????????
No brainer ~ end the listing and try agian without the 'jew it down' part.
....doubting the sincerity of an apology as well as his concern with who he offends......

"Common Phrase"?
Maybe in Nazi Germany in the 30's.

Unfortunately it is a common phrase in certain places.

I remember the first time I heard it. It was at a neighborhood garage sale in Oakland. My newest neighbor was fresh off the boat from a different state (I won't say which one) and he used that expression on the wrong person at the sale. It developed into pushing and shoving and near hitting within minutes. A few of us pulled them apart and sent him home.

The new neighbor came to me later and wanted to know if I could explain why the other guy got so upset with him. He honestly didn't understand what had happened. I tried to explain, he still didn't get it, I told him he might want to rethink living in Oakland.

I heard that phrase first in my sorority at U of Minnesota. I was shocked. Over half my close friends in high school were Jewish. The comment slipped out from a suburbanite in Edina. She didn't see any significance or slur in it. Edited to add: it was similar to my experience using the word "gypped". Until I was corrected, I had no idea I was slurring an ethnic group.

Just reported for "offensive language in a listing". I hope eBay pulls it before it ends. There's no excuse for that--none.

Wow ~ I can't believe it is considered a 'common phrase' to so many of you!
You have no idea how many rude comments have run through my brain to "Ask Seller A Question"!

I think you were a jerk for posting this subject. Its a fact of life in the USA that there is so many phony, righteous, hateful, holy than thou people that say these horrible words. And guess who says these words the most Gentiles, Christans, Born Again Christans, Catholics, and all these groups talk about love. I'am a old guy now, but I have witnessed thru my life time, hearing these horrible words about Blacks and Jews. Hate is alive more than ever in the USA.
I have seen more Jews and Blacks that are more Genuine and Generous to there fellow man, than these other relgions that preach love. Behind those closed doors in there homes they spill out plenty hate about other groups of people. That is a living fact of life in the USA

"Wow ~ I can't believe it is considered a 'common phrase' to so many of you!"

Please remember that stating a fact, that is IS commonly used by some people in some places, and APPROVING of the use of the phrase, are two entirely different things.

"I think you were a jerk for posting this subject."

Why is Zoomin a jerk for bringing it to our attention? He (or she, sorry, don't know) didn't write the ad and obviously doesn't condone the phrase. Get a grip!

Oh, okay. I didn't see any quotes and I assumed the worst. I'm sorry about that.

Did he type "go f*#% yourself" through eBay? If so, did you report him?

how so?

I have no desire to be tolerant of blatant hatred or people who excuse themselves from spreading it by false apologies condoning it by stating that "everybody does it".

zippy
just shocked by the lack of shock ~ didn't mean to imply that you approved of it!

Racial/religious/ethnic slurs are never ok.

I have to say, thankfully, that I never in my 50+ years have heard anyone use this particular slur.

I hope they pull the auction.

Anyone ever heard of stick and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me?

This what is wrong in America today. Too many people are worried about what someone says. Wouldn't it be better just to simply say, "Whatever" and move on with your life?

No! Do you think "sticks and stones" would have worked for the victims of the Holocaust. Did it end the Jim Crow laws?

No. It is not a "whatever" thing. Racial and ethnic prejudice must not be tolerated in any arena.

Words do hurt and worse yet they teach and foster hate for generations to come.

stone:
your grade school approach (sticks and stones will break your bones but words will never hurt you) followed by your high school approach (whatever) leads to prejudice, stereotypes, intolerance, and hate crimes.
Do you think the guys in their white sheets grow into cross burners overnight?

"Anyone ever heard of stick and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me?"

The problem is that SOME words lead to actions that do hurt...Ask Matthew Shepard or James Byrd. Oh, you can't, they are DEAD because of words (hateful words) turned to murderous crimes.
