Has anybody figured out how to photograph a lithopane which is in the bottom of a mug? It doesn't work to hold the mug to the light and try to take a photo.
A couple of years ago, we listed a 1901 GERMAN NAVY STEIN with a LITHOPANE in the bottom of MAD KING LUDWIG of BAVARIA... (some here may remember THAT auction, as I uploaded the pics here)...
To capture it, we held the stein up to natural light & took the photo with NO flash on MACRO mode, and it came out GREAT!
Interesting aside about this mug: my Uncle Bill had "liberated" it in Germany after WWII & gave it to my Mother; upon her passing, it became mine...
Turns out that the GERMANS made REPROS of these mugs during the 1920's...And the REPROS are worth LESS than the originals...
I didn't know this. Anyhoo, a "helpful" bidder emailed me that I was selling a "repro" and should change my listing!
I panicked & did so, and the STEIN only sold for (?) $60 or so...
Turns out there is a web-site devoted to these steins, I found out AFTER auction end, and mine WAS an original & NOT a REPRO...
Oh well...After Ralphie kicked me in the butt for being a sucker, I learned a great lesson...

Ditto what tom said...except I held mine up to a bright indoor light and took the photo w/o flash with my trusty Sony Mavica. I was able to "enhance" the image and it showed up fine. My stein was also a genuine reproduction. Sigh...
