I bought 2 scrolls from a yard sale today from a little old lady , she said she got them as a wedding present and she looked about to be in her 70's . Can you tell me anything about them from these marks. The first one has a wood possible teak box and the second one has 3 marks. Thanks !

They are Chinese characters but Japanese use them too,so you have to show the scrolls to see if they are japanese or Chinese?

Thanks for helping hwahwa. Heres a few pics of them open. They are so long its hard to get a good picture.

First one is a fish pole with fish at bottom

Symbols beside the fishing line

Symbols on outside of scroll

Second one is just symbols with what looks like silk around it.

Also do you have any idea if they are worth anything.

You have a Chinese painting from the most famous 2oth c Chinese painter-Qi Baishi .
There are many repros out there and some are repros made with this new digital technique and are legit as long as the dealer discloses it is a repro, they look like the real thing but it is not a painting,it is copy of a painting.
Some are fakes and I have seen some ,the ink is barely dry and runs over.
The tricky part with identifying the artist in Chinese painting is that students often practise painting by copying their teacher, they will paint the exact image and then use their teacher seal and sign and seal it.
Your painting is titled 'small fish' by old man Qi Baishi at the age of 91 years old.
My family has a painting by him of an eagle which was purchased in the 60s when he was not as famous ,so it could be authentic .
You have to look carefully if yours is digitally produced,or a fake painted by someone else and how old is this paint, just because it said it was painted by him when he was 91 years old, does not mean it was painted that year.
Another problem with Chinese water painting is that sometimes they will take the original and tear apart the paper to make 2 copies, the second copy is like a carbon copy with lesser ink,I have never seen it done??
Good luck, you can google and learn more about this man ,some of his paintings fetch a good sum of money in auction, given the fact that the Chinese now have money and want their old masters work back.

YES,the Chinese want their antiqus BACK-old bronze,old porcelain,old jade,old paintings.
I know a dealer who shipped her stuff in container load back to CHINA for an auction, she even went back to CHINA to attend it,but some of her jade carvings may be old,but she was told they are not good enough!

Thanks

Hwahwa, I looked at that link. I am seeing buying and selling but the FAQ says that they have "no time to answer any of these ca. 10 requests per day to identify..." so I don't think I can get help from them.

Do you trust that site for consignments?

yes,you can show it here and I will see if I know anything about your print.
Artelino is pretty good, they have nice paintings both Chinese and Japanese.
Another one is Ebay seller Renatamisic from UK,he has some beautiful woodblock prints.
If you want to sell, there is one based in USA,they run Asian Collection Internet Auction.

Thanks Hwahwa
Here it is. It has some damage but mostly to the mat. It's definitely not a new reproduction print as I don't see any type of dots. The last photo is some type of date mark, I think - I can't remember but I tried to research this piece awhile back.
Sorry - not my best photos as I wasn't use to this camera

And the winner is Hiroshige Ando !
Hiroshige landscape prints are much sought after ,you may be able to find a site which features his prints.
Is this a long and narrow print?
If so,it is worth more,as it is rarer .
Ask those folks at Asian Collection internet auction,or Kotobuki how much it is worth.
Or Mita Arts ,they are based in Japan.

Wow that's a real time saver - thanks so much. I looked for hours and hours before and I don't think I was ever found that name. I owe you.
I saw some of his stuff at the site you listed but they want a credit card to show prices. I'll do that later and let you know what I find.
It's is long and narrow but not so big. I don't have it handy to measure right now, but I'll get on this the first of the week. Thanks again.

Does that make it rare or less desirable?
I'll go on that site today and start a new post to let you know what I find out.
One question - is there a way to tell if this is original? I know it's a woodblock but was it done during his life by him?

If it is not one of the 300 prints on that site,it is not as popular and sough after,so it could affect its price.
There are original and there are restrikes and there are fakes.
As long as the original woodblock is in good shape and there is demand for his prints, the publisher can make more copies using the same woodblock, however, these woodblocks become worn and the copies would not look good.
Restikes are made from woodblock carved in later period, either the earthquake or fire destroy the original block or the block is too worn to be used.
Fakes are fakes but these days making woodblock is a dying art and you cant find any carver to make fakes, most fakes are made long ago when there are carvers around looking for work.
Some prints are dated,on the margin you will read the date (say Meiji year 10,month and day),and carry the seals of the artist, carver and even the publisher.
Hiroshige is famous and his prints are much sought after, some of his popular sets have been recarved several times like his 53 stations of Tokaido and his 36 scenes of Mt Fuji.
You have to remove your print from the frame first and see if there is anything written on the margin.
