A postal clerk told a friend of mine that her 1st class package to UK was automatically insured for up to $400. Unless this is new, it's not true.
I can't find refers to it anyway on the USPS site.

They include a certain amount of indemnity coverage for the weight, I just noticed them doing that, so it may be new, but it is usually under $100. As far as I know, you still cannot insure with 1st class int'l - but I would love to be wrong on this one!

I don't believe that's correct. There is indemnity coverage included for just under $70 for priority mail packages, but nothing for first class.
