I received the following in an email from UPS:
" ... We'd also like to inform you of the changes in small package and less-than-truckload (LTL) freight rates that will take effect January 5, 2009.
UPS published rates will change as follows*: The average UPS Ground and UPS Standard to Canada rate increase and UPS FreightŪ LTL General Rate Increase will be 5.9%. Air and International services will increase an average net 4.9% through a combination of a 6.9% increase in rates and a 2% reduction in the Air and International Fuel Surcharge index."
I thought everyone might be interested, as to what we can expect in 2009.

I always use FedEx Ground for my larger and heavier packages. Plus, for absolutely 100% guaranteed overnight delivery, FedEx is the way to go.

Problem with Fedex ground is not everyone can get a regular pick up - in my area, fedex ground packages have to be taken in to a staffed location, we don't have pickup.

I guess I'm lucky. I drop mine at a Kinko's 2 blocks from my coffee stop. (And get to write off the mileage that day)
