Having a laptop that doesn't run Vista... priceless.

I know what you mean. Actually we are looking for a mini for my husband to use when he travels. He refuses to carry a heavy laptop around with him (and I have to agree with him - they are a real PITA). Vista is fine for his purposes.

I read in the WSJ that many business travelers are leaving laptops at home because their smartphones do everything they need. I used to take my Dell everywhere; now the two iPhones do it all.
Your husband knows best, but this could be why we'll see low prices on laptops this season.

My husband could never figure out a Smart Phone! He is gadget-challenged (even though he is an engineer).

I agree with your husband and am a fellow engineer. I saw us go from Vacuum Tubes to computer chips all in the spirit of speed, miniturization and progress. I am now seeing us go from computers to hand held devices (smart phones) mainly for internet/email communication. Unfortunately we now have to be able to read and respond on screens the size of a Dick Tracey Wrist Radio. Miniturization and convenience ends when we need a magnifyuing glass or small finger dexterity to send and receive emails. Its fine for occasional travel or airport situations but in my book give me a laptop anyday. I may be a little older but when my son sends me a text message to tell me something, I wonder why doesn't he just send me a voice message. The young tech types sure won't agree with this (until there eyes and finger dexterity changes with age) but the old way was certainly better. PS, I would buy a used XP laptop. The cost of all new software for Vista and the hassles with its issues just aren't worth it. This is the worst Microsoft release since windows 2000. chuck

The minis come with XP! I am pretty sure that's what we are going to get.

I can't believe this is year - it's like Christmas in early November - I've never seen the volume of decorations/songs etc for Christmas this early. On a good note - sales have picked up a bit.

Chuck, I couldn't agree more. My 13 y/o son keeps texting me - usually because he doesn't want me to say no - because he knows I'm texting-challenged. I've forbidden it. If he has the time to text, he has the time to call.

So who bought one of these today??? New laptop or Tv??
On the texting, I feel the same way. Its a cellphone. It is used for calls. If I want to use a computer, I use something that does not strain my eyes or test my dexterity. We even had texting removed from our contract.

We bought the laptop. The deal breaker on the minis was that they are just too mini - no CD -DVD player/burner - not much memory.
The laptop (so far) is great. VISTA doesn't seem SO bad. Hubbie is happy.
The tvs were gone right away (store only had 2) - there were 39 laptops and those were gone before the sale opened at 8 (they handed out numbers to people in line - we got 23). The sale was only publicized on the internet.

greetings from Asia.
I bought a Lenovo laptop for HK$4500,around 575 US dollars,no sales tax in HK.
It is the cheapest model I can find,I suspect they are getting cheaper.
The mini version is like a toy,the salesman told me young kids like them as they are easy to carry around, they sell for 3400 HK dollars.
They call the financial crisis a tsunami and it is spreading in Asia-
lots of layoffs and small businesses folding.
Exports to US has slowed down in recent years, but now Europe is in a recession.
A container load to Europe used to cost US $1500,now it is US$200.
300 local investors who have bought safe financial instruments backed by Lehman bonds are still demonstrating and trying to get their money back.
They probably will get 5 cents on the dollar, now if Obama or what that funny looking chap Tom has side by side with G Bush will let them emigrate to US,they promise they will eat no more than 10 ounces of meat per month.
*
Economic Reform act of Chairman Obama of the socialist States of America :
10 ounces of meat per month, half a yard of cotton per year per adult.
Hellilujah!
