I recently moved back home to help my folks as my mom deals with something on the Alzheimer's/dementia end of the spectrum. In combining households and working out closet space, I've run across several nice sport coats and suits that I'll never wear again.

Unfortunately, none of them have any kind of tag in the pocket listing their size. I think I remember what most of them should be but I'm trying to think through how to best list them online so I can get them to someone who can get some use out of them. Obviously I can measure in inches the chest, sleeves, etc., but does anyone know anywhere I can look online, or maybe know a handy rule of thumb, for declaring a certain measurement as a 40L, for example?

Maybe it's just me, but, when I search for clothes on eBay, I search for size and ignore the measured inches. Like many people, I assume everyone is like me so my preference would be to list the inches but also translate that measurement into the commonly understood size.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Others here will have expert advice for you, Jeff. I'm wondering if you could at least give a size range, even saying what sizes you wore in the past. I honestly believe that inch measurements are much more exact; that's probably why the shopping channels give that along with the sizes.

I've sold clothing on ebay in the past and I've never had anything returned because it didn't fit. I ALWAYS put the measurements. It doesn't mean you won't get returns but you will stand a better chance of not getting any.

It's just my opinion but if you buy clothes on ebay I think you should look at the measurement as well as the size (if they are given) - it's just not fair to the seller or yourself not too. Could save shipping cost for both of you.

Jeff, I am sorry to hear of your mom's dementia.

Before you get into the whole taking photographs and measuring sleeves thing, please be sure to do some research on eBay to see what comparable used items are going for and if they are actually selling. Clothing can be hard to sell even in the best of times -- and these days one can pick up a new sport coat for less than $50. Many sellers are offering free shipping now, too. They have to, to have any hope of their listing being seen.

I have the same issue you do, with a closet full of once-expensive clothing that is now much too large for me.

I don't want to say you shouldn't try to sell your stuff, but it's always nice to get paid for one's efforts. Which is why I haven't listed my silk blazers and formal wear yet.

Craigslist might be your answer.

maybe a good tax write off if you file the long form and just donate the clothing to a worthy cause?

I know locally we have a Rescue Mission that we love to support - they really DO help people locally.

We are getting our year end tax write off donation ready to go
