In the next few weeks I was planning to buy a new computer (take advantage of the holiday sales)... but I have pretty much ignored the problems of Vista since I use XP on my current system. I see the Apple commercials, and have heard some complaints from people about Vista, as well as reviews of computers complaining about Vista running slowly.
I'm looking at a laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium with 64 bit & 4GB RAM, probably a 250GB Hard Drive, and either AMD TurionX2 or an Intel DualCore processor.
What headaches am I getting myself into?
My main concern is using my older software like Office 2003, Photoshop 7.0, Acrobat 6.0, even a really old version of Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition 4.0 (which is my favorite program for fast editing of photos for ebay), and of course, Vendio's SM PRO.
I've heard plenty of complaints, but does anyone out there like Vista? If so, why?
If you hate Vista, why haven't you installed XP? Or is that not possible now?
Lastly, what are the pros/cons of Apple's Macs? I only ask b/c if I have to deal with all new fresh software to get into a Vista Operating system, it may be the best time for me to convert to Apple. Anyone have experience using the software, GarageSale for Mac?

My husband loves it, it's on his laptop, and he has had no problems at all. On the other hand, when we bought a new desktop about 6 months ago, I wanted to get XP again, and we got one with the option to add Vista if we wanted to.

My sister Betsy bought a laptop this summer with Vista 64-bit. She loves it but has had some trouble finding software compatible with the 64-bit. I think there may be a way to toggle to 32-bit until more compatible programs come out but I would check on that.
I know for sure that Office 2003 is not compatible

I'm just learning how to use Vista. Not too bad. You can run older programs in XP mode (not well publicized, for some reason). I was really limping along on my older XP machine, so Vista seems lightening fast for me.

Neglus,
Why do you say Office 2003 isn't compatible? I have Vista and don't use office on it enough for it to be a problem for me - I just use the new version. But I have a colleague who does a lot of work at home and she had Office 2003 (which we use at work) installed on her Vista laptop.

I have to say that I don't have personal experience - going by what my sister said. She claims it is the 64 bit that causes the problem.
I do know that I was not able to use Trend Micro Internet Security (I had 3 licenses) with Vista on my daughter's laptop. I found that Kaspersky Internet Security is top rated for Vista use.

I have all of the Adobe software from a few years ago. I love using Photoshop, but not for editing auctions because it is more tedious than using more basic software. Most of my ebay editing is simple- cropping, adjusting brightness/contrast, maybe adjusting color slightly to represent the product properly. I want something quick and easy to use... what do you recommend for Vista?

It's been a bit of a struggle, but mostly Vista is working okay now. I have TrendMicro security, no problems. I have the Adobe 4.0 that you have, no problems.
Pixi: What older programs are you able to use with Vista? Any bulk uploading? That's my biggest complaint about Vista.

Roadsmith, see my separate thread about how I got Vendio Express Publisher to work in Vista (in EO and the Services forum). I was able to install old drivers that supposedly weren't Vista compatible by running their set ups in XP-mode. I use Open Office. My son uses Photoshop CS-3.

Adele - I think it is Vista with SP1 that is the problem with Trend Micro.

I'm using Vista with the SP1 installed and not having any problems with Trend Micro. You might of just had a bad install the first time you tried it. I would try it again.

I purchased a new laptop and PC -Vista operating system, last year. Personally I prefer XP.
I have a XP-PC in the den. Mostly play games on it.
I do all business stuff on my newer Vistas. I installed Office Pro- 2003 on both laptop and the PC. It was terrible until I got used to "allowing" and "run as" all day long. Installing my Zebra printer and Dazzle was enough to drive a a "normal" person over the edge! Installing camera software,Photoshop, HP Printer, was freaking mind boggling. But I "got her done" --
Dazzle still does not "fully" support Vista. Real old software is :lots of fun" to get to work on Vista _NOT !!!
There is no help on Vista version of Dazzle. You would think with a new Microsoft program being release this summer all the Vista kinks were solved and all programs were compatible without all the obstacles-NOT!
Microsoft must realize Vista is very irradiating and is not user friendly unles you like jumping through hops to "allow" or "run as"
BTW - I got a 64 bit Vista at Sam's a few weeks ago and returned it,it was even more evil than the 32 bit. It was a great buy , shelve model and got it at a steal BUT it was evil!
Dell Business.com still sells some XPs but I think Vista is on there also -two operating system.... I think that is correct.
I only buy HP- just because they have been good for me.
VISTA IS A GOOD OPERATING SYSTEM BUT IS FRUSTRATING and aggravating to run.

I may try the newby Microsoft is introducing late spring 2008.
So many Microsoft folks have jump ship to Apple. Apple is good system, but I like Windows.
Gates got on the ball and this operating system is heralded to be user friendly -- time will tell.
I have been offered a chance to try one in beta. Windows 7 was to be released in 2010 but because of the frustrating evil to user issue(haha) and non computability issues with Vista, it will be out next year-Spring or early summer.
