Sorry to sidetrack the thread, but I'm mourning the sudden demise of most if not all of the stamp machines in the Portland/Salem OR area. They're gone from the post office lobby, gone from the grocery store - heck, even my bank's ATMs (US Bank) are permanently out-of-stock. Googling, I find that the phase-out of stamp machines was first announced in 2006. I can't help but wonder if the arrival of the $1 coin put government pressure on USPS to update or eliminate their machines. How is it cheaper for postal clerks to disperse stamps than machines? I usually don't mind waiting in a short line so I can pick my choice of a variety of stamps, but that doesn't include the long lines at Christmas!

post office is a retail store....they need to increase their profits. You will probably see all these machines on ebay shortly.
The older smaller ones go for $50-100 each. Might get $1,000 or two for these full size ones.

Our post office has an automat - a machine that disburses stamps and mails packages with a credit card. The stamps are thinner than usual USPS issue but the plus side is that it is open 24/7 and you can get first class stamps (I don't think they offer other denominations) for exact $. Perhaps other offices are moving towards the automat too?
