I'm using a IBM Think Pad and today it started going black on me.
If I close the top and let it go into sleep mode when I open it again - it works for a few minutes (at first it was seconds) then it goes black again.
Everything seems to be working OK with the exception of this.
Anyone know what this could be?
It's as if it were going to sleep on it's own or something.
TIA

I know nothing about the IBM Think Pad but that is exactly how my digital camera was working yesterday. I would turn it on and in a few minutes it would go dead. If I turned it off and back on the same thing would happen. It was weak batteries and when they were replaced t worked fine. Not sure if the Think Pad works on batteries but if so I would check them.

#1---have you tried hooking an external monitor to it?? Use the Function/F7 key.

#2---energy saving settings should be checked

#3---could simply be a loose LCD RIBBON CABLE...easy to check..but be careful...inside of laptops are fragile

#4---possibly the (Intel Pro/100 SP Mobile Combo Adapter) or whatever is on yours can be removed and sometimes the laptop will reboot with no problems

those are a few choices...what model number is it?

Thanks for the link Toni, I was able to find a local repair person but I have not call them yet. Hope I don't need to.
I have a external monitor hooked up now and it works fine.
Yes I tried the F7 key as the link the Toni sent suggested that as well. It didn't do anything.
It's a T40.
I'm going to let me DH check out some of these suggestions before I panic.
We're getting ready to go away for a long weekend and dragging this external monitor with me doesn't sound like a lot of fun but we do what we have to do!!!
Thanks everyone for the help - you guys are great.

Hello,

Good luck with this, hopefully it is as others have stated and its just a loose LCD ribbon cable.

Otherwise its possible the monitor burned out.

You could check your Windows Device Manager to see what the Display Adapter you have is currently, then search for any updated drivers available for it.

Regards,
Chris

Thanks for more suggestions Chris.
I don't really think it's the monitor as it's bright when it's running. It doesn't fade out - just goes black. I think we have it narrowed down to a connection or maybe the battery is going.
At any rate I'm not going to worry about it today. Happy New Year all.
