I seem to remember on a post quite a while ago that someone mentioned a product that can remove the adhesive residue from the removal of a label on books and magazines. My husband it going to the US next week, and want him to get me some. I buy a lot of craft books, and when I remove the label, it leaves a sticky residue.

There is a commercial product called Goo Be Gone. I understand it works well. I use mineral spirits. I would test it on a piece of paper that you don't care about, as it might leave a stain on a pourous surface. Works well on glossy paper, like a magazine cover.

Tell him to buy a bottle of spray on GOO GONE. It is fantastic on almost everything! Get it at Office supply stores, CRAFT stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby or Walmart or even Target. A little spray goes a LONG way! If you need something in a pinch, wrap some tape around your finger where the sticky part will be facing outward & lay on the object & lift. May take several pieces of tape but it works!

Some non-toxic solutions are rubbing alcohol or vodka. Apply to a paper towel and work small areas. Do not apply directly or rub too vigorously as it might damage glossy covers.
Lemon essential oil works great to remove adhesive and petroleum based stains from any surface but may leave a light stain paper.
I'm with luckyLulu and often use tape to remove adhesive from paper.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all the help. Otteropp, I haven't been able to find the Goo-gone in Canada, I am wondering if it is just in certain provinces. I'll try again tomorrow. I hate it when I remove labels, and then find the covers of 2 books have stuck together!

Get Goo Gone - NOT Goo Be Gone. There is a difference. Goo Gone is much less toxic. It comes in a plastic bottle and smells like oranges. The other stuff smells like it is going to kill you.
Goo Gone also sells a kit that includes a tiny bottle of Goo Gone with a price tag scraper. I use it for records at our store and it works great.

Amber, Goo Gone is definitely the best. I have not seen it here in a spray bottle or even with a scraper, what a marvellous idea.
Ours comes just in an ordinary 236 ml bottle.
Try Canadian Tire if you have one near you or Home Dept.
In Canada we have the nasty smelling toxic one called Goop Off..DO NOT buy that one, the fumes will kill you!

Do you have JoAnn Fabrics in Canada, they carry it as well as Home Depot, Lowes, WalMart, Target, any craft store and many supermarkets. Ebay has it too, just put Goo Gone in search. Works great, wouldn't be without it.
Edited to add:
If you can't find it Send me your address will be happy to mail you a 'complimentary bottle"
