There seems to be a particularly nasty malware computer virus going around and it seems that Spybot and AV programs are not preventing it.
Take a look at this EO thread for more information (topic got sidetracked): http://www.vendio.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=686695
Now would be a good time to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program because once you are infected you probably won't be able to.

It's also a good idea to back up your data.
I didn't think I had any data worth preserving but oops -- TurboLister backup files.
Hubby told me this morning the virus is believed to be linked to a vulnerable Java release.
We thought we had removed the virus yesterday but it came back today. This behavior is widely reported.
The only sure way to get rid of it is to reinstall the OS.

Fluffy is right about backing up! I have flash drives I back up to and my data is automatically backed up to Dell's servers nightly. It costs less than $10 per year for that service if you have a Dell computer. The doctor at my office uses the Dell backup as well! Thank goodness because his computer crashed and he had to have a new hard drive. He went to his Dell account and was able to retrieve all his files that had been previously backed up.
Also, if you have a wireless router, don't forget to password protect that!

Sagipsul is rumored to exploit vulnerabilities in certain versions of Java.
Java is "interesting" in that even if you're running a safe version, you can still have buggy versions resident on your computer, open to infection.
To find out what version you're currently running, open a DOS window and type:
> java -version

What is the suspect buggy version of Java? I can't find it on Google.

OK Guys,
My computer had been running weird lately but I have attributed it to the fact that I have not reformatted in five years and it is way overdue.
I downloaded the malwarebytes program but of course they want money. I see no mention of money here so before I send money I want to be sure that this is worth it. Is this program something most of you have been using? Does it work better than Spybot and ADDware or would I have to continue to use them as well?
How can I find out what version of Firefox I have? Dumb question I know :=)
Peace,
Don

When I downloaded it, they only wanted money for the Pro version. I've been using the free version for days.

They didn't ask me for money. Are you sure you downloaded the right program? I wouldn't pay for it, especially since it doesn't appear to have a permanent fix for the virus.

Don - Go to Help on you menu then About Firefox to find your version. I don't pay for a spyware removal program. Microsoft has two that I have on my machine. They are free from Microsoft. One is Windows Defender: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx
I downloaded the program Don is speaking of. In order to remove the spyware, it is asking for money. Otherwise, what they find stays on your machine.

Cheryl, dah, thanks for that I knew that, it just escaped me - some days.... I do have V 3.0.5
This whole thing is interesting. First, I was able to down load the free version so I must have clicked on the wrong one initially. However when I ran the pro version it does a scan, then you have to pay to have the stuff deleted. The pro version found 230 problems! the free version found 4 problems.
So from what you guys seem to be told, if I can download Malware and run it I am not infected by the Sagipsul?

I have McAfee and Spyware Doctor but my computer seems to be running slower than normal. Will either of these take care of Sagipsul?

Hello,
Another item to look at when thinking about the speed of your computer is your available hard drive space.
Generally its best to keep about 20% of your hard drive empty of data, to keep things running as quickly as possible (or at least so that isn't one of the causes for slowness issues.)
Vendio is in no way affiliated with this company, so use it at your own risk - but I have had great success using a program called CCleaner to free up unused disk space. (The first time I ran this it found over a gig of wasted space)
Regards,
Chris
