2009 has got off to a good start for Australian online payments provider Paymate, who has announced an arrangement with eBay that will significantly broaden the market for their product, particularly in the US.

MOTO Payments/Virtual POS Terminal

MOTO Payments/Virtual POS Terminal

Paymate is pleased to offer a new service to sellers who may receive orders over the telephone or in the mail. Mail Order/Telephone Order (MOTO) Payments are useful for sellers who may receive orders offline but have a valid authority to debit a customer's credit card for the payment. This secure online service can also act as a Virtual POS terminal for merchants with small volumes, saving costs of equipment and line rental.

Paymate does not encourage this method given the risks of fraud and the exposure of sensitive credit card data. We recommend sellers ask their buyers to use the Paymate Express payment button on our home page to make a payment wherever possible.

However, sellers can apply for this MOTO service and on approval by Paymate enter customers' details to seek authorisation of payments. Conditions apply and the seller will need to maintain records of authority and comply with security procedures to protect cardholders' information.

Please email [email protected] This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to apply for the MOTO Payments Service, providing information as below.

What types of sellers will be permitted to use this service?

Paymate will assess the risk before approval of the service on a case-by-case basis. This will include the category of products or services being sold and the track record of the seller with Paymate. Payments for high-risk categories like computers, mobile phones, etc will not be accepted.

Can Auction or Website sellers use this service?

No. We require the credit card holder to make the payment on our secure web site for all auction payments. If you have a website, please add Paymate Express payment to it so buyers can make an online payment as normal.

Can I set up Recurring Payments via the MOTO Service?

Yes. This will be an option you can select when submitting a MOTO Payment. Please refer to the help page on Recurring Payments for more information on setting up a Recurring Payment.

After the Australian government wouldn't allow PayPal as the only payment method for eBay, there's no way eBay is going to allow their payment system here in the U.S. I hate PayPal, but as US sellers, we're pretty much screwed. Our government didn't give a carp about us the way Australia's government cared about them.

Ebay actually invited paymate to partisipate on ebay. and in the very near future you will see their links on ebay.

If you want to read more about this then copy the links at the bottom of the article for access to their webpage.

This is going to happen within the next 2 to 3 weeks.USA sellers are being invited to use and register for this new system in the usa. I am already accepting payment thru paymate. And It is user friendly.

I still can't see why bank transfers aren't accepted on ebay.com like they are on eBay Australia, Germany, UK... In most developed or first world countries bank transfers are both safe and fast. Are US banks less secure that those in the rest of the world? Maybe eBay knows something we don't... Given the fragile nature of US banks I wouldn't be trusting them with my hard-earned cash.

US is a much bigger country than Australia and we have more banks than any country(someday may be India and China will top us).
A few reasons I can think of -
Some have their cash with credit union, not sure how they clear? Not sure if every bank, credit union use ACH?
do buyers want individual sellers to know their bank information? They dont even trust stranger to give them their cc data?
I for one would not want anyone everyone selling in flea market my bank account number.
Also where is the seller and buyer protection if payment is made over ACH?Once payment is made, there is no reversal, there are exceptions which banks will intervene, but not for item not as described or item not delivered?
Also from my own experience,ACH may be free for paying bills to business enterprise such as CC issuer, utilitiy companies BUT NOT TO INDIVIDUAL,I recalled paying a $5 fee for transferring fund from my bank account with BANK OF AMERICA to my account with Wells Fargo Bank.
USPS once designed a system where both buyer and seller sign up with their bank account ,once the seller shipped and USPS delivered the item with DC,payment held by USPS is deposited in seller banka account, not too many people know about it and use it.
another reason is that you have to have cash in your bank to make payment with bank account transfer and many US buyers dont have enough cash or they prefer to use their cc and earn points.
Feel free to add more reasons why.

Also,ACH does not work with overseas transactions.
Plus bidders dont have to pay Paypal fees,it is the sellers' problem.
