I would like to send my grandson 100.00 he has a paypal account so it would be very easy for me to transfer the money from my checking account.

What I would like to know is if I do this would there be a paypal charge for the transaction, would he receive the entire 100.00 or would fees be deducted.

If I could do this without a paypal charge how would I go about it.

it depends on the type of account he has to receive money...personal account (below $500.00mnth) doesn't have the fees...business or premiere account is up to 3.9% fee.

there is also a 30 cents transaction fee on top of the 3.9% discount fee.

Send him a check. At least he will get the whole $100 then.

Not if he doesn't have a checking account.

I think mcjane's question about PayPal has already been answered.

When I was looking to set up a money transfer system for occasional cash infusions to a relative, I opened a free checking account and sent her the ATM card.

She can always send him $105 instead of $100 to make sure he will get at least $100.

Thanks for the replies, cleared up my questions very well. He has recently opened a checking account so I am sending him a check in the mail, decided not to use PayPal.

For next time - there is no fee to receive $ if he has a personal account AND you send it using a balance (not credit card).

Here is the chart from the PP site:

Sending a check seems so much simpler.

It gets even easier if you have an online checking account. Nothing to write out, nothing to mail -- generally the bank will mail it for you and pay the postage.

Even easier, faster and safer is electronic bank transfer which are normally free to both parties in much of Europe, Asia and Oceania. In fact in the EU you can now do cross-border transfers for free!
