That is so totally unfair!
What is there to investigate? Nothing!
All it should have taken was a 'real live human being' at PayPal to have checked to see that it is a Buyer playing games!
Ooops...I forgot that PayPal is owned by eBay and they don't have 'real live human beings'.

Is it possible that the account has been taken over. I don't know what is going on, but for the last 5 days, I have had up to 20 spam emails saying they are from eBay a day. I don't know what is going on, or if it is just me. In the past there was one a week at the most.

I had this happen to me a year or so ago. The buyer from Canada left for vacation a few days after he paid and filed a PayPal dispute in case the item did not get delivered while he was gone.
He got home and dropped the dispute. I gave him a negative (THE GOOD OLD DAYS) stating what he had done for future sellers.

Paypal shouldn't allow a dispute to be open so quickly.
If the dispute is for "Not Received" it's too soon and if it's for "Not as Described" and he has not gotten the item, that should send up a red flag as well.
But, of course, we all know that paypal won't do anything to help you out. Hope it's not a lot of money as it sounds like he may have more in mind.

paypal doesn't give a reason, and the buyer replied back saying they didn't realize they opened a dispute(?), yet they haven't closed it.
The bidder is a newbie - maybe trying to see how easy or not it is to get their money back (and keep the item)
I'm basically shocked thay paypal would allow a dispute imediately after payment.

They allow it as soon as ONE DAY after the payment is made. It happened to me two years ago. New bidder makes purchase, pays right away with Paypal - filed non receipt claim within 24 hours.
Spoke with, or rather screamed at, Paypal - they allow it because "particularly during the holiday season, some sellers specify and promise 24 hour arrival".
Buyer says she thought it should only take 1 day because her Mom got her item within 1 day (seller was able to ship same day and lived in the same city). She closed it 2 days later when she received her package and promptly gave me a negative - I replied in kind. As Toolhound said - the good old days.

Caroline,
I suppose it would KILL paypal to check the auction description to find out if those particular situations were described on ebay. I am amazed that so many take the crap that ebay and paypal dish out with only a complaint on EO. I don't think anyone should have all of their eggs in one basket.
