Just a reminder that sellers located in California, should change their tax rates on 4/1/2009, so as to reflect the new sales tax on taxable sales to California buyers.

Further, I recently received an email from a service provider regarding California reaching out to online sellers in other states for sales tax on sales to California residents.
Here is a portion of the email:
"As you may already know, there are proposed California bills that could require the collection of sales tax for online purchases similar to bills proposed in other states and that could resemble the law that recently passed in New York State. At this time, a hearing date for AB 178 has been set for April 13, 2009. As with all laws, if passed, these laws may or may not apply to you and your business."
Further, here are two sources of information on the proposed California bills that you may find helpful:

It's very disturbing that California should be able to impose tax-collecting duties on sellers who do not operate in California, but sell to California residents over the internet. It is the buyer's responsibility to pay applicable sales tax for items bought out-of-state. Are we going to require that every small internet seller collect taxes for every sales tax state and that every brick and mortar shop require valid ID for state of residence, collect and send the appropriate sales tax to each state?
