Got this email yesterday. Seems like an ordinary email from a buyer that has my email address:

Hi,
I am responding to the email for your auction which was posted on eBay.
I believe i emailed you a week ago regarding this sale, and my interest in it.
Please confirm that it is the same auction with the one posted on eBay link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200306068935/ /

I am very interested in this auction and ready to complete the deal as soon as possible.
Hope to hear from you soon!
Thank you,

Seemed harmless enough since I do not block my email address when I get a question from buyers.I do not sell in Ebay motors. When I searched on Ebay for the item # given, not going through this email link,
the item # did not exist.

Just thought I would put this up as a warning.

Reported it to Ebay as a spoof.

Hello,

Good catch, that is certainly a scam.

The above thread on the eBay AU board talks about this exact same email making it's rounds.

Regards,
Chris

Answer from Ebay:

Hello,

The email that you received was the result of an account being used
fraudulently. The account was used to send messages in an attempt to
collect personal information (such as passwords) from our members. We
are now in the process of resolving this situation and investigating if
this was an unauthorized account takeover.

The link in the message takes you to a "spoof" (fake) website, which
looks like a real eBay sign-in page. When you "sign in" on this page,
you may be giving access to your password. A form may appear asking for
bank account and credit card numbers.

I did not click on the link or give out any info.

It was deceptive though, since it looked like a regular email instead of trying to look all "ebayish."

I get these on a regular basis, but not with the link to E-Bay motors but usually having to do with sports items.

That's nothing new, in fact not even very good any more.

Just wait for the ones that actually have your auction number and all of the proper information like ebay id, city where you are in and others except they use your e-mail as an identifier instead of your real name. They are damn good and very easy to get suckered by.

That is why it is crucial that you never answer any questions via eBay's unsafe e-mail system or by clicking the yellow button. Only answer using your e-mail's respond or reply button. That way, they don't install a virus on your computer. In most cases, when you hit the reply button, it will be obvious that it's a phish.
