As a Silicon Valley denizen and reluctant PayPal user, I've received PayPal study invitations from three different survey companies in the last week.

Interestingly, the amounts offered have varied ($100, $125, $200). The stated purpose of each study has been different as well. Two studies were to be conducted at PayPal in San Jose, while one was slated for a Sunnyvale location.

I've participated in PayPal studies in the past. Being local is a big help, plus I sell on both eBay and the Web. PayPal is always trying to increase their payments market share on the Internet.

Three studies all at once, though, is a little odd. And it looks like they're spreading their business around to various market research firms.

Since I wrote the above, I've been accepted into one of the three studies. I probably shouldn't go into the particulars but one request amused me: I was asked to NOT wear mascara to the study session. Make of that what you will.

Maybe they expect Fluffy is going to laugh hard enough to cause tears. . .no mascara is certainly odd.

They could be using three different firms for a number of reasons, that really doesn't surprise me. I'm totally baffled by the no-mascara request. My first thought - is someone who is conducting the survey hyper-allergic - if so, how do they survive in public? After the survey, please let us know (if you can) the reason for the request. I can't believe it's because PayPal is branching into the cosmetics business.

Edited to add: the fact that 3 firms were given your name clues me that these surveys are separate, not the same survey given by three different companies unless the purpose of the survey is to test the market research companies.

No Mascara ...

Rate the following answers from 1 to 5 with 1 being the most likely and 5 being the least likely.

a. you've received an invitation from a serial killer who has a problem with painted ladies.

b. you will be required to consent to an iris scan before your survey check is released.

c. you have been invited to an Oprah makeover

d. It is part of a psychoanalysis profile. Failure to follow instructions will be grounds to ban you from the study and PayPal will close your PayPal account and sieze all your funds.

e. They are filming a commercial of typical PayPal users and want the audience to look like hausfraus. Bring pjs and curlers.

You guys are a riot!

I actually know the reason for the no-mascara rule but I'm having too much fun reading your responses.

Are you sure you are not going for a surprise "make-over??"

My husband thinks I should go in work clothes: bathrobe and bunny slippers.

Are they going to blindfold you? Have you nap on pristine-white linens? Inquiring minds want to know!

Edited to add: my work clothing is a Lanz nightgown. I have an alarm that reminds me at 2:30 PM to change into street clothes (before my kid gets home from school). I hate it when the mail carrier needs a signature...

I work in my underwear. Not to worry, I usually check to see if a car is coming before I go out to get the mail.

"I usually check"

Yes, but there is always that one time, early in the morning when you think no one is around so you slip out the front door inappropriately dressed only to find your neighbor had a sleepless night and is out trimming his hedge at 5 am <g>

It interferes with video-based eye tracking.

Eye tracking is used to determine which parts of a screen the viewer looks at. It's useful because, for example, test subjects may take longer to gaze at a non-product image but fail to mention that image when asked about their experience interacting with the site.

"Heat maps" are generated by tracking eye movements. Web designers use those to help design more compelling pages.

That's interesting, fluffy.

I belong to a group here that does regular studies. They pay quite well. I got to do a mock jury and was paid $350 cash for 2 hours worth of work. It was actually fun and hard to consider work. The next study was listening to 2 hours worth of music. Thankfully, it was classic rock music, which I listen to already. My daughter got stuck with 2 hours of pure gospel music. She looked green when she got out of the room.

Edited to add: I'm not implying that there's anything wrong with gospel music. However, my daughter listens to rock. Hard rock. Far removed from gospel.

I went, I saw, and while I didn't cry, I sighed.

I can't go into specifics (dang them NDAs) but if PayPal goes forward on this, there will be pain. I mean, some of youse guys are flummoxed when you don't get PayPal emails, so you probably don't handle change well.

PayPal has always had the decency to make incremental changes and make them slowly, unlike its parent company.
